I am doing an assignment for my Social Studies class, and I want to know how many aspiring UGers are seeking Nirvana.

For those of you who are thinking, *wtf, isn't Nirvana a band?* Nirvana is a concept that means quite simply 'Perfect Peace.'

Nirvana was begun by Buddha, an Indian Priest who taught many lessons on the basis that we can attain peace through our state of mind.

These are Buddha's laws, or the Eight-fold Noble Path.

1. Correct thought: avoiding covetousness, the wish to harm others and wrong views (like thinking: actions have no consequences, I never have any problems, there are no ways to end suffering etc.)
2. Correct speech: avoid lying, divisive and harsh speech and idle gossip.
3. Correct actions: avoid killing, stealing and sexual misconduct
4. Correct livelihood: try to make a living with the above attitude of thought, speech and actions.
5. Correct understanding: developing genuine wisdom.
6. Correct effort: after the first real step we need joyful perseverance to continue.
7. Correct mindfulness: try to be aware of the "here and now", instead of dreaming in the "there and then".
8. Correct concentration: to keep a steady, calm and attentive state of mind.

But in the long run, one person achieving Nirvana is not going to change the world.
We need to make others aware of it, and one by one, Nirvana will take over the world... IF you want it.

So, does anyone want to achieve Nirvana?

Please Post and tell me.

The only way we'll have perfect peace, is when we're all dead. Through out all history, there's never been peace, and there never will be.

Nope. Too much work. I just wanna get drunk and screw.

It's not really a search for human existence, it's more like a search to stop the cycle of reincarnation.

I don't believe anyone will be able to achieve that while they're alive unless you shun yourself from the rest of the world. There's no way anyone can live like that in the world we live in these days. I'd like to find inner peace, but there's always gonna be something small, like lying, or gossip.

I'm sure someone will end up blowing their head off again.
When a man lies he murders some part of the world
These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives
All this I cannot bear to witness any longer
Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?

I think, after reaching enlightenment, it will be too boring of a state of mind.

rhetorical question. of course it is.

but the truth is everyone is seeking hapiness. you don't drink, abuse substance or bang women to be sad or mad, you are trying to pelase yourself, but that's not what hapiness is.

I wouldn't mind it, but I won't. There is no enlightenment and truth in a subjective universe.

maybe in your subjective universe. thanks to solipsism i can reach enlightenment in mine. perhaps this also means i could will the pit out of existence if it's merely a construct of my imagination. hmmm.

IMO, "perfect" peace is even worse than the world today.

Imagine everyone agreeing on everything. I doubt our world would even hold up to that. we don't necessarily need war, but we need negotiation of some sort.

just my unknowing immature minded opinion on the big picture though. *shrug*

It depends on what you value. If you want progression, you can't have peace. And vice versa.

This stuff doesn't happen until we die, which is heaven, the eternal peace, and hell, the eternal war. We basically choose our side, and whether you've chosen or not, you've still been chosen.

yeah, I believe perfect peace is what you want in the afterlife. not on earth.

I thought Nirvana was based in Hinduism, and that the only way to reach it was through numerous reincarnations. Is there another word I'm thinking of?

nirvana is usually associated with buddhists. I am unfamiliar with the spiritual pursuits of hindu practitioners.

dunno. but imo that belief would be based on the/my theory of progression based on good/evil decisions in each life, bringing you closer to nirvana with each good, further with each evil etc.. which may take many lifetimes.
