hey UG, i have a peavey valve king 112 and a few effects, distortion, wah, flanger and a line 6 pocket pod. Anyways my question is, what is an effects loop? how is it different from having the effects between the amp and guitar?

The effects loop lets you put effects between the preamp and the power amp.

The preamp is where your channels occur. So the loop allows you to put, for example, a delay pedal after your amp has distorted the signal and it has been EQ'd through the preamp, but before the power amp, which essentially is the final stage in the amplification process.

Delay the distorted signal versus distort the delayed signal.

Or another example:
Apply chorus to the distorted signal versus distorting the chorus.

Mostly used for modulation and time based effects.

Put it in the effects loop and use the effects loop footswitch to turn the loop on and off.
