Hello, my car's shifter has been very wobbly lately. You can shake it while it is in gear and sometimes it has trouble fully engaging. It is a 98 sunfire 5-speed. Any ideas what it could be?

It's phucked!, no seriously its where your shifter joins to the selectors, I've got an '84 Toyota Hilux & the same thing happened to it!
Go & order a new shifter, They're not hard to replace!

Dude I got these strings the other day that couldn't be tuned to higher than 4 octaves below middle C then I realized that they were shoelaces and they weren't making any sound at all.

What is the technical term for the shifter? I can't find any replacement parts online.
Maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know much about cars.

Shifter, shift knob, gear selector... that's all I can guess

Or just search transmissions and it'll be listed in there somewhere.

Or it could just be a bushing thats worn at the base of the shifter. They're made of nylon and deteriorate over time. If they wear out, the base of the shifter (which is a ball) loses the ability to pivot and just wabbles.

That or your linkage is damaged (cable).
More UltraMatic than you.
