I had nothing open but AIM and UG, surfing the forums, and all of a sudden my computer went haywire with popups, spyware ads, and my computer making an alarm noise because it detected a trojan. It was located in temporary internet files, meaning it was most likely from here.

...

And all this time I thought you were my comrades... Who's doing was this?

You have contracted the Nick Grundy virus!

Sorry
When a man lies he murders some part of the world
These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives
All this I cannot bear to witness any longer
Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?

What file was flagged as a trojan? BTW- A virus and a trojan are two completely different animals.
#16
I don't exactly know. The trojan has now taken over windows security, leading me to an html ripoff of the control panel, OR my avast! page if I click the icons. This is a tricky bastard... It's also spiced up with a lot of the "download some anti-spyware, you simpleton!" sh!t.

EDIT: I broke through the foliage of popups and retrieved this file, identified as malware.

C:\Documents and Settings\Kaitlin Keselis\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\F19L1YT9\PopularScreenSaversFWBInitialSetup1.0.0.15-3[1].exe

popularscreensavers is a pretty common one.
Delete it, if you can't, reboot in safe mode and then delete it and scan your computer.
Just because your AV found it while you only have UG open, doesn't mean that's when it got there.

+1 Some viruses/trojans/spyware take some time to develop before they become something that AV software defines a "threat". Not usually the case, but it does happen.

Sorry to be so blunt, but that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. People who get viruses generally deserve to get them because they neglect taking security measures to protect their computer, and pretty much don't know how to use them.

As far as your claims about your Internet Temp files.... Do you have ANY idea how many websites leave files there? Do you know what ActiveX Controls are? Do you really know how TCP/IP connections work? You're talking out of your ass if not. AIM is also actually a big source for viruses because the user base is generally full of teenage girls and their dumb boyfriends who don't know anything about computers other than how to access MySpace.

*Note, I do communicate with AIM users, but I use alternative programs like Trillian and GAIM.*

Your virus probably came from a website you visited. It would absolutely not come from UG. UG has a dedicated server that's regularly defragged, cleaned and maintained. UG is a professionally hosted site, and legit sites like this one would never give you any of those symptoms. AIM is a very real possibility, but an interesting fact is that 75% of all virus attacks come from e-mail's.

Sorry to rant, but don't blame legit websites for your lack of experience and proper maintenance.
mmmmmmhmmm

That's exactly what I've been trying to say.

This is why you don't rely on the original Firewall.
!) Throw Out Computer
@) Buy a new one
#) Install Virus Protector (a decent one)
$) if that don't work, rinse and repeat.

Yea, that's true.
"It's not my fault I raped and murdered all those innocent women, UG made me do it!!!"

EDIT: to keep with the topic, perhaps we could blame UG for there being no end in sight for the war in Iraq? Or better yet, how about global warming?
