Well, this summer I intend to build a Explorer guitar but am having trouble on the body designs, don't know what to choose, I like the idea of a star but feel it looks somewhat silly. I also love the look of the classic Gibson V's so thats one of the shapes thats high on my agenda for choice. And then I also like the explorer shape but they seem to be too boring for me. Any ideas? I will be cutting the body myself so nothing too extreme

Should ultimately cost about £180 (pickups alone are £90! might look for some cheaper ones but doubt i'll find em)

What it will have upon completetion:

- 1 piece Basswood body (i'm on a budget so this is all I can manage with it)
- Tune-O-Matic bridge
- Humbucker in bridge position. (maybe swineshead same for the single coil)
- Single coil in neck position.
- Pickguard (maybe)
- Straplocks
- Gotoh Mini M6 Machine heads
- Gotoh tune-o-matic bridge piece.
- 1 volume, 1 tone and a 2/3 way switch. (if its 3 way mid might be an off switch)
- 22 frets

What I have got: (or ordered)

- Basswood body (ordered today )
- 22 fret Neck (reshaped it today as well was a Yamaha Pacifica Neck)
- Most of the electronic parts
- Strings
- Wire
- Various screws
- Many woodwork tools (my great grandad was a carpenter so I have access to all of his tools)
- Loads of sandpaper to sand everything

What I need:

- Router (could use chisels but I hear its not recomended so i'm gonna get a cheap dremel or something like one)
- Bridge
- Pickups
- A few other electronic parts
- Neck plate and bolt-on screws
- And some more stuff (names escaping me at the moment)

Rough design ideas - Will most likely be one of these not 100% sure though. (Designs courtesy of JCF Custom designer thingy)

PICTURES OF WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR!!! (sorry if there huge, also they were taken on my phone so there not brilliant.)

Top View, shows most of the shape.

Bottom side.

Top side, where tuners would be.

Front view (i think.)

It needs much more sanding but I think its off to a good start

Tell me what you think.

The reshaping looks pretty good so far.

I would go with the ESP style explorer. I like the sharper looking body but its not too "extreme"

I will definitely be watching, I love the explorers.

Yeah, i'm making some designs at the moment with good ol' Kisekae and a bit of photoshop, will post them up when i'm done.

I love the ESP explorer shape, its so much nicer. At the moment I think i'm liking the King V but i think its too common, if i'm gonna do this properly I have to be certain with my design. At the moment I'm stuck between the ESP-Explorer, King V and star.

Hmmmmmm...

Well, Vs are cool, but explorers are soooooo much more comfortable to play sitting down. I bought a RR V for a project guitar and its pretty awesome, but it takes getting used to

Yeah, this wouldnt be for me to play much and my guitarist in my band would like to use it. (i'm a bassist) I just had the neck lying around and found out that I could struggle to make this for just under £150 (The wood body blank is only £36) so I think I will be seeing this through to the very end just because I have the money and i've wanted to do this for a while.

And yeah Jimble, I got fed up with it sitting around so I worked out I could do this

Hows the body coming along?

My designs so far... (listed in order of favourite most to least)

*THE COLOUR OF THE BODY REPRESENTS NATURAL BASSWOOD WITH A CLEARCOAT*

V shape, so far my favourite I don't know what it is but I just like it.

Star shape, its different and I kinda like it, not too sure about it though :/

Rhoads, oh no.. the dreaded rhoads. I like the shape but I doubt i'll use it or this will turn into one of the millions of rhoads builds.

Explorer, looks pretty bad as this one but I think if it was the ESP version it would look much better.

Firebird... All i can say is Erghh.

Tell me what you think about my designs and comment/critise them.

Thanks, I'm liking the V's because there slightly easier to cut and because they look cool.

I'm not too hot on the Explorer at the moment, somethings not right with it. I did accidentally leave the wide single coil cavities off on that and the V but thats not whats wrong.

If you're gonna do the star change the shape. That one really long horn thing looks obnoxous. Other than that do a V with crazy bevels.

Edit: Don't leave it natural. Natural basswood=/= awesome.
#11
Yeah, I was thinking about that.. Might do a solid white finish.

Do stains come up well on basswood? I'm thinking they won't as the grain has next to no definition.

Improvements on previous designs due to basswoods lack of distinctive grain.

V style.

RR style.

*edit* forgot the strap holders on the RR ><

Even though I am using these as a basis the end product is likely to be nothing like it. I will probably add some personal touches to make these more.. Unique, well think thats the right word.

Yeah I think something looks wrong with the V and the pickguard on the Rhoads allows me to be a bit messy with the control cavity.

I still like the V however... Hmmm I guess i'll have to draw both up in the right size and see what looks better, anyone know where I can get the correct measurements & angles of the RR and the King-V?

Just done some more work on the headstock, looks much better IMO, edged it properly and sanded the logo off. Will post pictures up tomorrow morning.

I agree. Something just isn't right with the King V. I can't quite put my finger on it. I think it's the lack of a black pickguard. I think that balances the colour a little better.

props. I like a hybrid between a Rhoads and a King V which is what mine is like. I figured I'd out it out there to see if you had the same opinion.

I'm gonna draw both up accurately and see what i think then, i might try to merge them together to see what comes up.

Done some more work on sanding the neck and making sure my headstock reshapes working well by sanding it. Made loads of mess cause it was raining and I couldn't do it outside.

Pics (used a crappy old camera bad quality pics ):

Please note the black tape is there to stop me accidentally sanding the fretboard down, I don't really want to have to sand it all down. And the masking tape on the neck to body join is there to stop the same thing, just couldnt find my electrical tape.

Should I make a template for the body out of either thin wood or mdf? I have some laying around and feel like doing some work on this.
