ok, so me and a friend of mine are in this constant annoying debate and it really boils down to our definition of skill. i wont say what both of our opinions are because it really doesnt matter.

so, to me, skill is being able to make music that people enjoy and that sounds good and is fun to listen to.

skill to me does not mean soloing 500000 notes a second while putting in tapped harmonics in a some ancient sumerian scale that makes no sense while standing on one foot and saying the alphabet backwards. if the song sounds good, and is complex , then so be it, but if it isnt that melodic, then what gives....

So, to summarize me argument, a simple song can sound just as good as a very complex song. im not saying i prefer sloppier/simpler songs, im saying ill enjoy a very simple solo as much as a fast, complex solo or a simple song or complez song and so on and so fourth, as long as i believe both are melodic and sound nice.
thoughts?

Skill is just having the technique for playing and the understanding of what you're playing. Regardless of how fast or 'hard' it is.

Like, you could play 5000 notes a second, but if they are just random notes, then you suck. Simple. Or maybe you could play 5000 notes a second and you play a scale, if you don't know what what scale it is, then you have no skill. Now say you play 5000 notes a second and play a scale in Am or something and know you're doing it, then you've got skills.

Well there is songwriting skill, and technical skill. The two do not converge.
Candle in the Wind by Elton John is the best selling song in the world, but its because people enjoy it. Its composed very well. But technically speaking, it isn't the best in the world.
It's a pretty pointless argument.

anyways, I think skill has nothing to do with what people like it, why they like it, speed, or anything. I think if you enjoy the music you play, you have skill.

disagree.
you don't have to know exactly what your doing while your doing it, most people don't.
skill is knowing how, and the ability to do it.
it has nothing to do with knowing why, although theres nothing wrong with that.

It's all about how fast you can go "meedlymeedlymeedlymeewwwww"

Duh.
#27
It's all about the "it" factor. Some people have it, some people don't.

As Potter Stewart said: "I shall not today attempt further to define (it)... But I know it when I see it."
And I mean that in the best possible way.
#28
skill... you and your friend are both right, because there are definitions of skill for every aspect of something.

Yeah. The term "Skill" is loosely defined. In general it's used to mean ones ability to execute, although it could mean the ability to write and compose. Taste and artfulness within music is a matter of preference. You've managed to muddle all of these concepts into an argument where there can be no "winner".

I base my skill on 'feeling' the blues, so much so, that I can't even begin to give a description of it. No other skill can possibly be as great as 'feeling'.

if a musician can sound good with other musicians, or by himself, and can write his own songs, he has skill.

I have no opinion on this matter.
