What are the factors that determine whether something is living or not? Are plants "alive"? Are zygotes? Are comatose patients?

If it's sentience, then wouldn't plants be, because they react to stimuli (some move away from stuff, etc.)? If it's consciousness, then are comatose and mentally-handicapped people alive (they aren't aware of their surroundings)?

I ask because someone I know said that if plants and other things are considered alive, then computers should be, too, because they fit all of the basic conditions of life (reproduction, "biological" processes, etc.). But I don't just ask to settle the computer thing (he's wrong!), but I, in general, am curious what people think makes a thing alive or not (especially relevant to topics like abortion).

EDIT: I tend to think that the presence of DNA decides whether or not something is alive, but I don't really know how to defend that (because is DNA itself alive? It's just acid.). And then that begs the question of "are viruses alive?". Yar.

Since when could computers reproduce? Unless I've been missing some really kinky stuff here...

I'm hearing a steady *thump thump* from the people above me and I need some porno grooves to play on my bass to give them some background music. Any ideas?

If man makes it with his hands, it isn't alive.

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

Didn't you say that you had a stuffed fox that you would occasionally fuck?

Machinery is used to produce more computers. It's a stretch, which is why I didn't agree with him that computers were living.

Did you think that all the internet porn is really there for our benefit? Hell no! Its to get all the lady programs in the mood for data processing, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to put it, along with your other advice, into a book, the pages of which I will then use to wipe my ass.

Scientiffically it's the following things
* Movement
* Reproduction
* Response to Stimulus
* Growth
* Respiration
* Excretion
* Nutrition
#15
* Movement: all or part of the living object can move
* Respiration: living things obtain energy from food during respiration
* Sense the environment: living things respond to changes in their environment
* Circulation: living things circulate gases and other chemicals
* Growth: living things grow
* Reproduction: living things produce new offspring
* Excretion: living things are able to get rid of waste products from their bodies
* Nutrition: living things can make their own food or obtain it by eating other living or once-living (dead) things.

There enjoy your 12 year olds education.

No offense, but your questions are easily answered within a few years of high school or college level biology. But I do, I honestly really do, believe that it is good that you are questioning things the way you are. If you are questioning the biological processes with the (no offense) minimal biological education you have, imagine what you could do within the next five to six years.

Please, continue questioning biology and follow your life into biological studies in college (assuming that's what you want to study - do NOT study what you feel is 'safe' or 'easy'.
