70W tube or Solid State?

Are you looking for a stack or a combo?

Either way, I recommend Ashdown for anything in your price range.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

Get a Fender Bassman 250/115. I have one and it's awesome, good for home practice, rehearsals, and has a good range of options for gigging. If you prefer you could get the 210 version but the only difference between the two is the speaker combination, so it's all good. I'm yet to find anything significant about the amp that I don't like, honestly.

used Ampeg B4 head, with a working 2x15cab. craigslist.
solid state bass stuff is fine.
unless you are a tube snob, you are set for a long, long time.

you def. want a high powered head, and sep. cab.

No combos. You will regret it one day.

Surely the Bass forum would make more sense....?

True, but it takes FOREVER to get answers on there
