Hi ive just joined and i have a question

On alot of songs its recommeded to use your thumb over the top for a barre chord. i cannot do this ive tried and tried even if i place my fingers in the right place i cannot reach and my palm mutes the bottom strings. I can do a barre chord in the normal way ok too me ages to get it right though.

My question is will this limit my playing and are there any players that dont use them ( famous player i mean ) by the way im nearly 32 so my hands are not gonna grow lol

thanks kilf

Keep practicing, but if your hands aren't the right shape then it's just not going to happen.

Jimi hendrix was a big thumb user, as was SRV, and John Frusciante and John Mayer (*shakes fist*) use their thumb a lot too.

It does make some things easier to do, but a lot of the time it's probably not 100% necessary.

Not necessary, but it can enable to play small lead parts while holding the chord which can be pretty cool.
Keep at it, when I first tried it I thought I'd never be able to do it! But now I can no problem.
