me as a pc and mac user go with whatever you are comfortable with dont let anyone else persuade you otherwise or you will be unhappy
and answer to ur question macbooks start at about 1200 and macbook pro for about 2000 if you buy directly online you can get student discount of 300 dollars which i do recommend

get a macbook.

they are awesome but i spent about $2100 after upgrades and the warranty and some software...

BUT you can get them relatively cheaper than that.
#9
not even close to worth the money they cost. great 'puters though. plus apple has a really bad habit of abandoning their models/software/hardware/etc etc etc. in other words say you buy one now, in a year when you need a new part or tech support they are gonna say "sorry we dont use that anymore so we cant do anything"
#10
baha, yea deffo get one.
My mates got the standard one, and i've got the top macbook. The top one's a superb machine, but even the bottom one is great. Definitely recommend it.

Just get what you need in one, do you need a huge hardrive etc, it'll cut costs if you dnt do it

Macbooks run between $1000 to $3000 depending on what you want in it. As far as the silly geese that just had the flame war of "Pc users are too stupid" this and "dont get a mac" that, grow up fruitcakes.

Grow some balls and run linux.

EDIT:

Also remember that there are alot less upgrading options when it comes to Apple related products outside of buying from Apple. I mean, in terms of memory, hard drives, video cards, etc. That is, if you ever intend on upgrading.

also dont forget the XTREMELY high markups on virtually any software you want to run on a mac.

IMHO macs are great machines, but simply not worth the money-pit they can be/create

Absolutely, Macs are just superb when it comes to media, such as graphic arts, video creation, etc. HOWEVER, you have to have cash buring through your pocket to afford a mac and anything that comes with it.

Pcs on the other hand are much more friendly to apps, upgrades and more. Personally, I use PCs with linux. Never had crashing problems, always ready to record band's material, and there is a freeware replacement for any windows products out. For instance, M$ word<Open Office.

EDIT:

You know what, scratch what I just said. Simply get a high end desktop or laptop (This will still cost less than any Apple computer) and get good ol Windows XP. I understand that goes against what I said above, but you might save tons of money this way. Just a thought. If not, Macs are great alternatives if you have the cash.

I want one too, but I'm a broke college student and I won't even think about getting a new one. I'm thinking about getting a used one, maybe from about '04. I have to use a Mac because my major is somewhat sponsored by Apple in my school. Anyone have a recommendation for an older iBook?

DONT GET A MAC. THEY ARE USELESS. Before all the Mac lovers come out an say, oh Macs don't get virus, macs don't crash, mac are so much better, i'm a mac user and can't shut up about how good they are. NEWS FALSH, macs dont get viruses because no one has them, if more people had a Mac than a PC then there would be viruses on Mac. Mac's dont crash because they can't run anything decent to make it crash. GOD I HATE MAC'S AND MAC USERS HOW CAN"T SHUT UP ABOUT HOW GOOD THEY BLOODY.

Don't waste your money on a regular macbook...save up and get the MacBook Pro...its worth the price difference.

That being said...i'm not a Mac user...but i've used other peoples...if I had $2000, i'd get a different laptop, but if I had to choose a Mac, I wouldn't settle for anything but the Pro...

Start at 1099. At University? You get $100 off. This Monday is the back to school sale.

I'm more in the $500 range. I can get a 60 gig on eBay for less than that but I don't know much about Macs. All I need it to do is documents, research, and running some programs. I have my PC at home for UG and porn and all that jazz.

dont get an ibook. I just upgraded from an 04 ibook to an 08 macbook and its not even comparable. plus, the ibooks are all but obsolete because of the amount of ram they can carry (i think the max is 1.25gig) their power pc processor and the cosmetic changes (keyboard, camera, etc) i would recommend getting a first generation macbook if youre really tight on cash, otherwise dont settle for anything less than a intel core 2 duo model.

I can't find a Macbook under $600. That's definitely way above my price range. Maybe I should just get a Windows laptop?

i want to say no, get a mac, but you will just have to replace it in a year or two. my advice? save up as much as you can, then get whatever will last you the longest. preferably mac, but if not, go for it anyway.

yeah man i think you should go with the windows laptop
its my senior year and a few kids been carrying around their new vista laptops to school and ive looekd at a few and ive only seen one out like ten of em that had a problem and the problem was because he downloaded a virus using torretns lol
what you described you need is essentially a pc because imo (and a few of my teachers agree) that the only reason you should buy a mac is if you need to use the software and most of the time that software is Final Cut Pro and stuff but what people dont know most of the time you do have a pc alternative (the adobe collection which i own is fantastic cs3 ftw)
here are some few cheap alternatives that you might want to consider

Thanks, but I can't do new. I'd rather get an older top of the line than a new inferior product.

Despite what most people say, the platform you use really just depends on preference.

So, if you like the design of a mac and its proprietary system, then it's well worth it to spend $1500-2000 for a decent Macbook.

If you don't really care either way and wants to save money, get a Windows or Linux laptop.

Edit: And if you're a real bad ass like me, you should install all major 3 OS's in one PC.

macs are awesome, if you have connections...

I just bought a mac book pro for AU$2400,

In just over a week I now have every piece of (high end) video and sound editing software available and a 24in external monitor...

all via my lecturers and co-students at university

the only thing I paid for was the monitor, at a massive AU$92...

I just love student culture, we all cant afford anything so we help each other to steal what we need

so get a mac, then find some nerds
