A little background:
I've had a cough for 5 days,no infection-just a cough.
It's caused my tonsils and throat to go raw, although the cough itself has near enough subsided.

I just agreed to do an open mic with someone on Friday and I'll be doing backing vocals. However,my voice sounds...gritty,imagine a VERY mild version of Brian Johnson.

Does anyone have any advice to get rid of the gritty voice?

Get some of that Clear Voice stuff. It makes you angelic!

Apparently.

A doctor is hardly warranted, I think.

Drink lots? Surely there's some manner of over-the-counter medicine for this.

Will I be able to get that at a music shop?

I don't need the doc,the cough's going. It's reduced to 3 times an hour,from 3 times in 5 minutes.

and I just need to get rid of the grittyness, everything else is cool.
Water will probably help though.

leave and go join a grindcore band.

drop 300mgs of DXM (the active ingredient in cough syrup) about an hour before you go on stage. that should clear it up pretty good.
