I'm a guitar noob.
Right now I'm putting together a wish-list of what I want for my birthday (June 28).
I've got some straps on there so far, and now I'm wondering which strings I should get? I'm looking on musiciansfriend.com
Thanks in advance.

Ernie ball super slinkys.
Stay away from D'Addarios, they're actually not that great.
Signature? What's a signature?

If they're good enough for Devin Townsend, they're damn well good enough for you.

Strings are all down to opinion, my dear. They're not 'inferior'.

I find nothing wrong with D'Addario strings. I used to use the DR Extra-Life coated ones, and they were fantastic, However, i had to spend about $14 canadian for a new set every time i broke ONE string! Needless to say, I went back to D'Addario. Sure, it won't live as long as another string, but they can be bought individually if just one string breaks. It's all up to you.

List a number of different string manufacturers - Since you're new, It's safe to assume you haven't built a preference for any one brand. Your best bet is to try out as many brands/makes/sizes until you find one you like. I, myself use D'Addarios.
Schecter C-1 Classic (Antique Amber)
Ibanez JEM 7VWH
Crate Palamino Class A tube combo
Digitech RP80 Multieffects pedal
Ibanez TS9 DX Tube Screamer

I use D'addarios on my electric 9's, but I hate them for my acoustic. Tried Ernie Ball once and didn't like them at all. I have a set of Dunlop 10's on right now, and they are ok too.

Really, it's personal, so the best way to figure it out is to keep trying brands until you find one you like.

What's the difference between the gauges?

Which are better?
Gauges 10-13-17-26-36-46
or
Gauges 9-11-16-24w-32-42
#14
It's the thickness of the strings. I'd say go with 10's (usually the stock gauge), and go up or down from there.

Hmm, Strats come with 9s, yes?

Try Ernie Ball Slinkies. They are very good. I too do not like D'addario strings what so ever.

Ernie ball regular or super slinikies IMO

I get avery sharp and bright tone out of them. perfect for metal

why are metal musicians prone to fatness?
Cause there music is heavy.

Strings are like women...there is no "one" for you, but there are plenty that you can form long term relationships with. And everybody has their own varying tastes in them.

GHS Boomers. Those things are so fucking loud, its not even funny. It'll make a SS amp sound like a tube amp.

I use .10-.52's.
