I know a tad of musical theory, and I was wondering if someone could explain the basics of harmonizing riffs on a guitar. For example if I were to like, play a G major scale up and down, and then add a B major scale on top (a third?) would it sound good?

It would sound okay, but a B Phrygian would sound better (IMO) due to the fact that it will create various (in key) minor and major intervals, rather than just major intervals.

from what ive seen, most harmonies are based on the current scales modes. it sounds more complicated than it is though.
