Is it possible to string only 6 strings on a 12 string acoustic guitar?

12 strings actually put a lot of strain on the neck. Many 12 string players tune them down a step and use a capo to relieve some of the tension. Also stringing it with only six strings is a common thing, especially among fingerpickers who like the extra room.

Wouldn't six strings pull much less tension thus the neck and get messed up from the lower tension or something?

We're not talking about putting nylons on it. It provides enough tension, though it made need an adjustment, depending on the gauge. If you used lights on 12 and switched to mediums with only 6 strings, then there'd be plenty enough tension to require almost no setup at all.

Stringing a twelve strings with only six strings is very common. I know a lot of people who do it.

I know we aren't talking about nylons. I wasn't sure though if just the six would provide enough tension without and adjustment.

Depends on the guitar. It may need and adjustment, it may not. Generally, it's perfectly safe.

if you have fatty-man fingers, then string it with 6, it gives the person a lot more room to play.....
