Hold it so it's parallel with the neck, and push it towards the pickups after striking a note. Don't pull it away from the body because the trem isn't supposed to bend that way.

just push it in towards the body. that's all there is to it. although if it's a strat style tremolo then you'd better not go too crazy. it loosens the strings and detunes it really easily.

you move it towards and away from the body. i assume you have been moving it in a circular motion on the screw thread

you should find it, unless you left it on a bus or something
go to a guitar store, you can probably get a replacement

If you push it in towards the body, it slackens the strings, making the note go lower. If you pull it, it tightens the strings and makes them go higher.
Don't yank it up.
