So, I was trying to conduct a session of jamming with some friends of mine. They usually do well. But today, it was ridiculous. I played bass, as usual, there was a drummer and two guitarists. I was trying to start various ideas; none of which worked. Guitarist #1 just played up and down scales very fast. Guitarist #2 thinks he is amazing, and tried to play other bands' solos (Dragonforce, Protest The Hero) over what I was playing, which ended up horribly, since he does not understand that two things usually need to be in the same key to sound good. And the guitarists refuse to turn their volumes to a reasonable level. The drummer was just doing straight 8-beats under everything. Not one fill to be found.

I'm just venting, but if you have thoughts please speak your mind.

yeah it happens man. i have the same problem. my buddy nolan just plays stright solos and nothing else. my friend austin is a terrible guitar player in every sense of the word but thinks he's amazing. yet i've recently hit a sweet spot with my playing. i find the more i just play and not think about scales or anything it just comes to me and i have a sweet riff.

trust me man you'll get over it

I BELIVE IN YOU!

Dedicated people are hard to come by so you need to get yourself out there.

True that.

Your favorite band being Bad Religion I assume?
That sucks. I like them a lot, too.

Yea I get crappy drummers too. Once we were trying out this new drummer and all he could play was *bass, snare, bass, bass, snare* and he played that same freaking beat throughout the entire song.

even if you don't know keys, you should at least be able to tell whether a certain note works or not. It makes me feel better about my playing when other people I jam with can't.

On a side note, we were jamming the other night, and this one riff was giving my drummer problems. He was doing weird timings on the double bass drum, aso i suggested just playing a 4 beat single bass for now and coming back to it later. After arguing about it for a while, it somehow degenerated into him uttering the greatest quote I've ever heard from a drummer: (angry voice)"I CAN'T HOLD A RYTHYM!!!!"

*facepalm* You think you got problems.

i hate people like that... i have a friend who plays without a pick, he only thumb picks, and he thinks hes the next hendrix ( he can't play 1 song all the way through yet ). i was really exctied to show him the song i learned ( tea party - winter solstice ) so i was playing it on my acoustic 12 string, and halfway through he plugged in my electric, cranked it up way too loud, threw on flanger on full, and turned the distortion to full, and then started to play some children of bodom song. he also thinks its his " signature " to use a capo on the 4th fret.... nuff said.

Tell em that unless you're practicing a cover, it's pointless to rip off other people's solos. Tell him to woodshed that s**t or GTFO.

Try and structure your jam sessions.

Come up with some ideas before the session, and suggest working on them. Suggest a chord sequence and work over the top of that. Learn to build slowly, and get the band to follow suit.

Fills suck if overdone anyway, the drummers job is to keep the beat.
