Watching some guitar tutorials, I noticed that several of the tutors had a band on their guitars that went around the headstock and over the strings, just below the nut (it looks like a plastic tie-wrap). Could anyone tell me what these are called and what they're for?

Was it an acoustic guitar? And was it holding the strap to the guitar because there wasn't a strap post on the guitar?

It could have been used to dampen the strings, ive seen that a lot, especially on a bass

Yeah, ends up it was a hairband that he uses to dampen the strings (instead of wrapping your right hand around the strings) when hamering on legato style. If I'd have just played the tutorial a bit longer (where he explains this),I could have saved myself a couple of hours googling and posting this thread, doh! Thanks for taking the time out to reply though chaps.
