Well, everyone knows that you're not supposed to play stairway in music stores, but
before my lessons yesterday I was playing a 6 string banjo. Would it be against the no stairway rule to play it on a banjo? I played it anyways though, but now it made me start thinking. Is it alright to play smoke on the water on mandolin? Stairway on banjo? Iron man on some other type of instrument?

Yes. It is. If it's recognizable it's against the law. OFFICER! ARREST THIS MAN!

Thats very funny...
Probally, I don't see the problem with playing it anyway?
The other day a guitar center, I picked up a 12 string, and the first song that came into mind was the stairway strumming riff.....

Not being a guitarist, I don't understand this 'No Stairway' rule... Everyone I know who can play guitar can play Stairway. And does. On every conceivable occasion...
Someone explain this music shop etiquette to me please...

It's because of that that people don't want you playing it in music stores, they get tired of hearing it, especially when it's mangled by beginners.

Most places it really doesn't matter, but a few (usually privately owned) actually have rules against playing it, along with smoke on the water, iron man, and enter sandman.

If this post was not sarcasm, wouldnt SCOM be on that list as well?
Got a question about Baritone guitars? Feel free to PM me.

Thanks to UG, I converted from Metalcore to some "real" Metal.

I don't know if he intended it to be sarcasm, but a lot of stores in Seattle do have these rules. Yes SCOM is also on the list. On those lists, neither of those Metallica songs are on the list though.
