what is a minor scale and how does it differ from a major one

the major scale pattern goes 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8ve
the minor scale pattern goes 1,2,b3,4,5,b6,7,8ve.
the minor scale sounds, for want of a better word, sadder. this is because of the flat 3rd and 6th. The third is the note that changes whether it is a major or minor in chords; if it is flattened, it will be minor and vice versa.
