You should get a bass amp. The low frequencies out of your bass might damage a guitar amp's speakers.

when I got my first bass I got a deal where a bass practice amp was thrown in, try to find something like that (well tell your friend too). Unless hes going straight into a band then he should go for something bigger like a Mag.

When I was buying my bass, I accidentaly plugged it into a guitar amp. I have never returned to the shop.

you could probably get away with playing a bass through a guitar amp if it is moderately high powered has a high rated speaker and you keep the volume low, also close of the back if it is open backed, but this will not sound very good.
