Does that just mean cash? I'm supposed to include $40 in this thing either a check or "money order"

no...go to a bank or some gas stations and ask for a money order. you trade them cash for something thats basically a check except it cant bounce.

It's safer than just sending money through the mail, you know.

I do believe you just used Blink 182 and hard rock in the same sentence. It would seem you're rather confused.
I have a quote in my signature! And it makes fun of blink-182! I'm cool now!

You're supposed to write "This is a money order." on a check, and then send $40 in cash later.

don't listen to him.

A money order is a more secure form of cash, it's basically a check issued to you by a post office. you go to a post office, say "hey i need XX dollars in a money order" and they'll give you one. then you send it off.

if you have a checking account, that's slightly more secure.
