Every guitarist has seen at least one of the hundreds of canon rock videos posted on youtube. Surely it's time that a new version of something else was made?

Has anyone ever considered any other pieces of classical music that could be converted into something like that? Something with a prominent melody that everyone knows?

I thought maybe lux aeterna (everyone's heard it, just no-one can name it) could be, but there isn't much melody in it, and the bit that everyone knows would be very difficult to convert to something on guitar

ermm, steve vai did that beethoven song lol.
Some should make a metal version of tubular bells

Why does this often come up?

There were many, superior classical/semi-classical/neo classical/contempory classical compositions and movements played on high gain electric guitars and stratocasters before Canon Rock.

There, I said it. In quite a pretentious manner, alas.

And despite all these remakes, none are as good as the original JerryC arrangement.

Sweeping comment; have you watched all of them?

I think I have seen a few "better"...

I prefer Mattrach's tbh. Although I agree that most others aren't as good as the original (even though some are played cleaner)

I've watched a few.
Most of them seem to be more concerned with looking like they're just playing better than the original, and trying to be 'different' on top of that. I don't find them as listenable, Jerry's is straight up rock goodliness.

Maybe someone should try and do something original for a change... And good....
Demolition hands.... Got 'em!

Loads of guitarists have interpretations of classical songs. It's just canon rock is fapped over for reasons which are unknown to me, I'm guessing it's something to do with the Freemasons.

Why so many people cover Canon Rock when you can write your own works? Check out the last song on my profile "Heavy Prog" it took a little while to sort that whole composition out but I had it done in about 4 or 5 days from scratch.

Everyone should have a go at writing and/or playing their own, rather than just copying or covering other people, just my two cents... It's much more fun! Creative, too.

there's some buck toothed asian kid who made his own version of canon rock, and it was appalling. I don't think he knows what a key is, he plays random **** throughout the whole thing, and then when the key change comes he doesn't realize and plays completely out of tune

I would love to do my own one, but what program has the most realistic synth sounds so that I don't have to record every instrument? All I have is guitarpro, which only has MIDI sounds. Is there like one standard program that JerryC, Mattrach and anyone else who makes their own uses?

I combined Guitar Pro and various other programs to make mine. If you multi track the MIDI's and stuff you can come up with some suprising results. Many big bands and artists use MIDI keyboards. Don't underestimate epic programs like Guitar Pro, there is alot you can do with it; that program is as good as the artist who uses it.

Toccata and Fugue would be very good.
I tried to play it once but it was too complicated, if somneone could pull it off it would but amazing to listen to.

i would agree there, but it would be pretty difficult...

to be honest i do get a bit fed up of a lot of the songs that are just melodies from classical music played with loads of distortion.

There are two main problems with guitarpro

1) if you want to make a backing track, the quality is awful because the only way to do it is to play it and put a microphone next to the speakers

2) None of the instruments sound very realistic, especially the drums. It wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to record the guitar parts, but I'm a below average drummer

Are there any better programs? I have garageband because it came with my mac, but the synthd drums are very complex to program

i disagree, matt rach's "new canon" is superb and definitely surpasses jerryc's attempt

God I hate that kid, he's such a showoff.
Soon you will sit on the bench

You sell a dream you create
Condemned by what you condemned before
Smooth are the words you sing down and high
Underground is your joy your laws

i HATE the jerry c version of canon rock and all the versions that try to copy him.

listen to canon by trace bundy. It's much better than jerry c's version or any other electric guitar version.

The guy in that video DOES have tons of skill and is a great technical player, and I'm pretty sure no one on UG is better than him, but he does come off a prick...he makes tons of random and completely unnecessary facial expressions...

in his canon rock, look at 1:03 and 3:52...

Don't get me wrong, he is a great player (I dislike shredders, so I personally dislike his playing), but he just seems like he would be an asshole if you met him in real life.

Great playing though. People are buying his stuff and supposedly his stuff's on limewire already too. He has a good chance of being very famous one day.

Well, what I like about Canon Rock is that it's actually much better than the original canon in D minor, which is just a bland voice leading harmony exercise. So I guess pieces that could work should be ones that are bland and boring. I'd check Handel first.

Also, JerryC's arrangement is actually an arrangement, unlike Alexi Laiho's butchering of The 4 Seasons in which he just played the melody note for note quite distastefully.

...modes and scales are still useless.

1) wrong, you can export sound files directly from guitar pro

3) most of the instruments arent too bad but for drums you can export the midi track and open it in something like fruity loops and apply a sound font to it, giving you more realistic sounding drums.

Maybe. I haven't looked at the score, but it doesn't sound like it would be too hard to do. Especially if you dude multiple tracks.

EDIT: That Mattrach guy has a HUGE jawbone.
