This has probably done/ shut up Mortiis yadayada...

Metal album covers often (not uniquely in the world of music obviously) reflect the content of the music inside. What I find more interesting is the idea of painters and film makers influence on the musicians. I'm not really up to date on art or film, except 60's british horror, so what bands are heavily influenced by directers/films or painters?

The obvious band off the top of my head are Electric Wizard with the heavy Hammer Horror etc influence, and unnumbered death metal acts influenced by slashers, but I'm interested in more obscure fuilm and painting references...

Everyone is probably gonna hunt me down and shoot me in the face then piss in my mouth for saying this because they arent metal but My Chemical Romance had a music video about a japanese horror movie. And no im not emo. And mcr isnt either.
#3
If you just want bands influenced by 60's British horror, the mods will probably close this, cause that would go in the Rec Thread.

Anchorhead are based entirely on Star Wars.

I think they're the best unsigned band out there.

I'd say quite a few doom metal bands draw influences from such sources

Indeed.

Check out the film 'Blood on Satan's Claw', I discovered it cos Reverend Bizzarre named a song after it. Good stuff!

^It's a movie? Nice hahha
I just thought it was a great song title they had come up with

I've been always intrigued by old school horror movies (especially those involving religious and occult themes) and that's why I love bands such as Electric Wizard and many people probably already know that I have a fetish for bands with the word "witch" in their name hahha

I'll pull the obvious Nile.

And, off that, early Carcass (and a lot of future goregrind) covers depicted exactly what was in the music.

Nasty, gorey, sh!t.

Good sh!t, at that.

Lots of metal is based on film and art. It's a pretty easy source of inspiration; although arguably more of it has been influenced by literature, i.e Lovecraft.
#11
^and Stephen King too.

Metallica's One is based on the book Johnny Got His Gun which was made into a movie, which Metallica bought the rights of.

Celtic Frost have the whole 'H.R Giger' feel to them, but maybe i just think that because of the link between Tom and him though.

Most of Razorback Record's roster's bands are based off of Horror Movies

And Mortician. Can't forget them.

Altar of Plagues use a slideshow of old movies and paintings during live shows, but Im not sure what exact sources they take them from.

Interesting idea for a thread though, will have do some research.

VISUAL ART.

LotR was in written form until recently, but they already were writing songs about it before the movies.

There's this band on this years Wacken who has old horror movies on mute going on a big screen in the background while they play their soundtrack to it. I think it's a really cool idea, and I would definitely love to see that.
Dyer's Eve is awesome, and has an abnormally large penis, which doesn't act as any hinderance to his everyday life despite its freakishly large size.

Listening to it now.

Can't help but feel that half of it is missing, not having the visuals in front of me, but the music is very cool. I'm really digging it.

Any way, the reason I bumped this was to remark on how much I enjoyed listning to 'Blood on Satan's Claw' by Revernd Bizzarre whilst watching clips of the move of the same name.

Alien, with it's giger influence is also good for compling clips set to bands like Atrocity.

The Axis of Perdition base their music of Silent Hill, much of Iron Maiden's music is based off movies and such.

'The Ichneum Method' by Axis was more infuenced by Alien and Giger. TBH I'd be dissapointed if AOP were influenced by Silent Hill...

I just got the movie The Devil Rides Out, I hope it's as good as the Reverend Bizarre track

also Electric Wizard took Witchcult Today's cover from it

The album Deleted Scenes from the Transition Hospital, is definitely influenced by it. The album title is a direct reference to the first game, The Elevator Beneath The Valve, refers to a specific puzzle in the game, and there are a number of soundbites from the game used.

There is some shizit on youtube with Ulver's recent discography set to HR Giger paintings.

Creepy indeed, when you take into acount how Ulver constructs their music. (Creepy)

On a side note, and slightly un-metal...Emerson Lake and Palmer's album "Brain Salad Surgery" was featuring the artwork of HR Giger as well.
