In Canada, being the strange folk they are, milk comes in bags.I once threw a thread massively off course with this little factoid.
We from the rest of the word are only too happy to allow you Canadians to continue your idiosyncratic and highly unorthodox method of bovine mammary excretion transportation in the comfort of your own country.
Unfortunately, however, "milk bagging" seems to be contagious. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7447449.stm

A leading UK supermarket has started stocking milk in bags. The end is nigh.

No longer can I humorously mention that "In Canada, milk comes in bags" whenever Canada arises in conversation because it does in the UK as well

What do my fellow none Canadian UGers think about this?

I find it to be an affront to all that is British.

Soon my milk man will be dropping off sacks instead of bottles. Then within months we'll all be eating maple syrup and using the term "eh?" excessively!. The first skirmish of an invasion of our fair British isles begins in our shopping isles! Who'd have thought it. The end of Britain will come not with a "bang" but with the squeaking of shopping trolley wheels heavy with the burden of milk bags.

Damn you Canada! Damn you to hell!

The video shows that we British people just can't "do" the whole milk in a bag thing anyway

Yeah... But I live in Britain and I've never even heard of milk in bags before this thread

That's kinda mean to Canada. And personally, I think milk in bags is a good idea. But that's just my opinion.

I saw it on the breakfast news when I woke up this morning.

The first thing I thought of was the afore mentioned quote - "In Canada, milk comes in bags."
I was tempted to post on here about it happening in the UK, but by the time I got home I'd forgotten.

Until this was posted.

As Canada will attest to, the milk man is an out dated, romantic notion. Death to bottles!

1 - Does your fridge not have a shelf inside the door for putting milk bottles in?

2 - What about once this 'bag' of milk has been opened, then how do you store it?

Milkmen are still around?

I've only ever seen milk in jugs or cartons. Never bottles, bags, or boxes.
and this moment keeps on movin'

You guys actually have a milk man? I thought that was just an old wives' tale. Lucky bastards.

As a Canadian I have never seen milk in bags. It comes in cartons for smaller sizes and the 4L comes in plastic jugs.

I don't think anyone uses them any more to be honest. My neighbour does, thats about it.

There really is no need for them when you can buy 4 pint (and bigger) cartons from a shop that stay fresh for a reasonable amount of time. It's cheaper to get 'em from the shop aswell.

Haha, in the video he treats it like a confusing technology...

You get a jug (no lid you ****ing idiot)...
You put the bag in the jug.
You cut off a corner/vertice of the bag.
The milk comes out when you tip over the jug...

Ah the rest of the world...

way behind the economic pros of not having a milkman or glass bottles...
Way behind the environmental factor as the bags are often recyclable plastic
Way behind the space factor... They take up little room.
Way behind the awesome concept of milk in a bag.... (It's the only way to have it)

EDIT: Many people from out west in Canada (Alberta) don't use milk in bags because they ****ing suck... unless they do... but from what I've seen, they don't.

I don't know anyone who doesn't use milk in a bag except for like... 2 friends.

You guys are waaaaaayyy late

I used those in Cuba in the late 1990's, I just poured the entire thing into a glass jug we had and refrigerated it. Was really nice also, it reduced trash size and it was very economical.

Doesn't the bag fall out if you don't have a lid...?

Also, once the bag's open, the milk will go off incredibly quickly if you don't keep some sort of lid on it.

And to be fair, he was following instructions that came with the jug, it's a bit unjust to call him a 'fucking idiot' for that...

It's funny, I went to Alberta for the first time this year and their milk comes in jugs (and I laughed at them )

As for how we store the bags once their opened, um, we have a container designed for that

milkman system is incredibly efficient. makes the distibution of it more environmentally friendly. Glass bottles are recyclable.
For the ones that are recyclable sure it's beneficial. but not much more than the glass bottles if at all. plus some are biodegradable bags, that just means they get thrown away and not recycled. and cartons are recyclable IIRC.
space factor? it goes in a huge ****ing jug. and the others that aren't being used still take up a decent amount of space.

Milk comes in bags in Bangladesh too. Well, when you buy it in a store, it does. It comes in a rusty bucket if you buy it fresh.

Actually that's smart. Rather than making plastic jugs and throwing gas prices out of whack.

Edit: Hey when you go to buy milk is there ever like milk everywhere where someone punctered a bag?

I've been to a school cafeteria in here in the States that had bagged milk.

The UK still has milk men? Weird... The only time you see milk men in the US (at least where I'm from) is on TV Land.
