I've been saving for a Carvin Legacy head. In about a month i'll have the necessary funds. Recently I've been given the opportunity to purchase a vintage 1980's carvin X100B for half the cost of the Legacy. If I buy the X100B I could mod it and make it a pretty hot amp and with the left over cash I could finish the mods on an Ibanez RG 470EX I've been working on.

My style is hard rock boardering on classic metal with a litle prog thrown in there. Most of my guitars are equiped with EMG's and various Dimarzio and Duncan pickups.

What do you think I should do?

I think the speakers will be the deciding factor on this one. If the speakers are the same, i'd go for the old amp. You do say that your sound is related to classic metal.

On the other hand, there could be reliability issues with the X100B.

But ultimately, as everyone would say - try, try and try again.
either way it's gonna be pumping thru 2 12' Celestion V30s
