Right, now i've finished all of my exams for the year and have a 6 week break coming up. Yet again i have nothing planned so with the arrival of my pre-paid credit card i've decided to have a bit of fun as i have to spend at least £50 to recieve some bonuses!

NEED HELP CLICK HERE

PICKUP AND DESIGN SUGGESTIONS NEEDED!
See Post #5

Now i'm happy with my gear however i wan't something that can perhaps achieve a more extreme sound in terms of tremelo and gain.

I've decided on a slightly more radical shape but unfortunately due to circumstances out of my control i can't build a guitar from scratch (no that i could manage it). So i trawled ebay to find a cheap guitar and found this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Black-V-Guitar-new-starter-kit_W0QQitemZ180252718097QQihZ008QQcategoryZ2384QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

I know the quality will be shocking, however i like doing this sort of thing and if i can create a useable guitar out of that i'll be pleased.

The plan is to create somthing that looks like:

By madsalty at 2008-06-11

So i plan to:
  • Fill the neck cavity
  • Sand off the finish
  • Re-finish body and headstock in metallic pink
  • Airbrush Pinstripe Decal
  • Replace all hardware with hardware from GuitarFetish UK (Cruncy Rail Pickup, LFR)
  • Replace all Electronics
  • Laser Cut a new pickguard
  • Sand and re-shape neck (maybe aplly matt finish laquer)
  • Keep budget to minimum

Any thoughts?

Any suggestions, don't be afraid to post suggestions for designs/kisakae designs etc. and hardware suggestions because i'm open to ideas!

Regards,
Mad

if its plywood dont buy it

Strangely i've actually emailed them about this, it's not plywood, it's poplar although they have hinted at it being a unattractive cut, although it is one piece and for the price that's fine by me.

Any suggestions on styling?

I need pickup suggestions, aesthetics are probably paramount here, however i don't want anything too cheap and nasty. I've thought about everything from a EMG 89 to a GF High Gain Rail!

I want a hard rock humbucker that's going to drive my amp and give me enough gain to pretty much do anything. I do however need OK cleans because ocasionally they do come up. Apart from that, it has to be white and match my theme GO Mad!

Help please!

BTW i love your white RR style guitar i think it looks great.

I want to create an eyegrabbing guitar and i'm not a fan of any dark colours or obscene graphics so an obnoxious colour it is. Are you not a fan of pink?

It may go bright blue, i'm undecided btw.

I'm doing super-bright pink with black modern bevels for mine... it'll be KILLER.

And yes, you should SO do the project. Those £50 Vs on eBay are a bargain for what you actually get, as long as you don't expect perfection out of the box.

**** GFS.. get an Irongear Steamhammer in white for the bridge (£22.50).

Hey, i've been watching yours actually and think it will look killer! Personally i'm not a fan of black though so i thought i'd do pink and white!

It's good to hear about the V's i was guessing they weren't going to be great but that's not what i was after and its good to hear they could become something worthwhile!

And oooo the steam hammers look good!

Yep, they're great pickups - especially at the £22.95 price, even though I'd pay ~£50 for them. They quiet, well-balanced, clear, and have enough output to satisfy pretty much anyone. Also, everything I've had from Axetec/Irongear has been with me the morning after ordering.

thanks!

And I am just not a big fan of pink. Seems to cheesy/girly for me. But its your guitar. Do what you want. If you want an eyecatching paintjob do a flouresant color like yellow, green or something.

I have had reservations about the pink but i want it to look garish and really in your face and looking girly doesn't really bother me

Bizarrely enough, pink is actually the most metal colour at the moment. Black has become so bland and cliche, and pink is now the most outrageous '**** you' colour.

I think it would look pretty hardcore! And i've got hold of some fluorescent pink paint, the kind that is super high visability for industrial use, so not only will it be outrageous but seriously hardwearing!

Don't do the pattern on top, whenever I see someone paint a pattern on the face of the guitar it usually turns out looking crap. Go for the pink though

but will it stick to the guitar?

Of course it will, when it's properly primered, and to make it extra hardwearing intstead of laquer i'll use a coat of super clear acrylic. I've used it before and it turns out really nice!

I have to agree knowing my skills as an airbrush artist to be fairly average i might just leave it uncomplicated and have just the pink!

When i've completed it, if it looks too bare i'll laser cut the pattern just a bit like a template and just spray it on but otherwise i'll just keep it simple.

I'm definately going to do the pink now and as i sit here on the cusp of buying the flying V in question for the mod, i thought i'd just check.

Does anybody know where on ebay i can get an offset flying v new for less than £62 delivered to the UK with a FR style trem?

I have seen those but due to the nature of the work i'm going to carry out and my budget + it would be alot of work putting a trem on (with no router). Thanks though!

OMG for £61 it plays pretty well. The neck actually feels nice. The floyd isn't great but stays in tune pretty well and although the finish isn't great i can honestly say the build quality has impressed me i'd quite happily pay over £100 for this guitar.

Anyway for the moment whilst i save the money i'm going to set it up properly and play it. I may even record some sound clips for you. Any requests? (now you must take into account i suck at guitar) hehe!

I might just learn up the whole of Crazy Train whilst i save for the other project components, i learnt the rythmn parts along time ago but never quite got around to (or at that stage i wasn't good enough) to learning and playing the solos!

Secondly it will be fun, this isn't the first time i've done this and although i'm not building a guitar it's still a technical excercise!

Need some help guys. Where can i find an:

  • Authentic/original/branded - Floyd Rose Locking nut
  • Quality Tuners - Please recommend me some stable quality tuners
  • An upgrade floyd rose system that might just work!

^^ Remember i'm in the UK and kindof on a budget!

On another note i've decided to change the colour scheme to black and pink (i'm not copying anybody intentionally just with the resources already available to me it's the easiest route) after deciding i really quite like the styling of EMG pickups and can't afford real white ones. So in the neck is going an EMG Select (8.4k) and in the bridge a Kent Armstrong super distortion (19.8k). By running those i should have a super versitile setup. I am aware the EMG select series aren't great but i'll cope. I like the styling.

Any thoughts, pickup suggestions again etc.

Thanks

Have a look on Axesrus.com and Axetec.co.uk, or search for stuff using Google Shopping. Wilkinson tuners seem reasonable for the price (£18 from Axesrus, I think). Axesrus also sell heaps of LFRs, but I've never tried them, so I don't know about the quality.
