I am a huge fan of JA. What amps did they use?

I heard that the rythm player, Paul Kantner used a Fender Twin Reverb for his cleans and a Vox AC-15 EQ'd for mids for his OD. He also played a Rickenbacker. The Twin Reverb gave him a bright clean, and his Vox gave him a mellower, mid-powered OD.

How could I best replicate this with SS?

I am going SS because I don't have money for tube. Also, every time you re-tube, you've basically bought that same amp again. For my budget, SS is more economical, even though I have to sacrifice a bit of tone. But if and when I start gigging, I WILL buy tube.

So for the intial question, how could I replicate a Twin Reverb clean, and a Vox OD using SS?

I was thinking about getting a Frontman, a chorus, and maybe a Bad Monkey OD.

Frontman is a NONONO!

Check into a Blues Jr. by Fender. It's all tube and very cheap! New they're about $400 and even cheaper when used. It will deifnetly get you those Fender tones.

Otherwise for a lower price, check out the Fender Super Champ XD. Which is modeling and tube! It has a modeling preamp and a tube output stage. It has both a great Twin Reverb and Bassman model and great cleans.

Oh and does a retube cost as much as the amp itself? Unless your amp is a Valve Jr. with NOS tubes, power tubes run up to $40 for a pair. Preamp tubes are very cheap too. Also, generally you only need to change the poweramp tubes, say every 2 years. Preamp tubes don't need to be changed that often. You could use 5 year old ones without problem!

Again, SS ONLY (for the time being at least).

I've only been playing 2 years. I need to work more on my timing, and my lead work is non-existant. I'm an exclusively rythm player right now. I am going to wait a few years before I get a tube, when I can justify it more. Also, I don't have a job, and I dont graduate uni for at 2 more years, so... And my dad's a farmer, so we're poor, well not poor, but we cant get niceties like tubes.

But, when I have the budget, I will get a tube, most likely Blues Jr, or Vox AC15.

One can only hope.

Just get an AC15, it's really not that expensive and will be a piece of gear you could use forever. You say you don't have much money, but you're willing to buy a stop gap amp that is only a little cheaper than the one you want? that my friend is a waste.
I don't give a shit if you listen to me or not
#5
stop gap amp?

^ what does that mean? I've never heard that expression.

also down here, the Ac15 is $700. The Frontman is $250. hardly a difference *sarcasm*

the frontman sucks. that'd be shooting yourself in the foot. do you know why it's $250? just save up more until you think you have enough for a decent tube amp.

yes, its $250, because its a SS. If they made a tube version, it would be around $600 or so I guess.

until I THINK I have enough for a tube?

I THINK I could get a tube for $200 (Champion 600 (5W))

what the champ? all the controls are is voulme. I guess I could buy an EQ, chorus, and tremolo to go with it. maybe a boost for volume.

the Fender Princeton Chorus from the 80s is a GREAT clean amp

What sucks about the frontman?

I would get the Super Champ to save on having to buy pedals. I'm not sure which I would use most often, so the FX modeling would be good to help figure that part out. I guess I mostly would use chorus and tremolo.

It's supposed to be 15W. would that be loud enough for coffee shops and medium-sized places with 2 or 3 other people (if and when I get good enough to gig). But I'm undecided on the modeling pre-amp. Modelling never sounds as good as the real thing.

Or you could get this I recomended from the start! Sounds VERY similar to the originals!

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-SuperChamp-XD-120V-Guitar-Combo?sku=483075

It's $299, has 15W of power, so it can do some cleans too. And it isn't as boxy as the Champ. Also it has a great Twin Reverb and Bassman simulation, you'd LOVE IT!

Well, alright, Gabe. Here's what I'll do. I'll take my fingers, gouge your eyes out and put 'em in my pocket an' let you count me change.

How's tha' sound, Gabe?

That soun' 'bout right to you, mate?

*BRITISH THREAT*......LOL

I guess either the Super Champ, or something similar. Depends on if it has a good sound with an Epi Casino through it. Probably, but you never know til you try. Next time I'm at GC.

But, in case it dont work out. What sucks about the Frontman (other than SS)?
#16
^Terrible overdrive, total inability to be turned up loud. The cleans are ok, but you can do leagues better.
I don't give a shit if you listen to me or not

$250-$300......what amp would best cover Jefferson Airplane for the price?

in addition to what people have already said (so far Super Champ looks best)
#19
A 5 watt tube amp would probably be loud enough cranked for the gigs, but clean it probably won't do it. I'd say it would be worth a try at the least as you will get a good tone out of them.

neptune, don't keep posting new threads about the same thing if you're not gonna take our advice!!

the fender FM is an alrite amp but it won't be ANYTHING to brag about, that's why we're saying not to get it. just like any other SS amp, when you turn it up past half way it will start to sound nasty....meaning it's a WASTE of your money!! i think the super champ would do best for you!

really you shouldn't make excuses not to buy a tube amp b/c there is NONE unless you're buying your first amp and want something with lots of extras. tube amps will give you a sound no SS amp can do.

The Super Champ seems the best, again I'll try it out next time at GC. Also, since we've established the best amp. What about fX?

I usually use a chorus. I was thinking the Boss CE-20.

Tremolo? What tremolo would work best for Jefferson Airplane stuff? Boss would get you by right?

Also the wah.....

What wah would be closest to the one heard on the song "Greasy Heart" by JA?

that's about all they use I think. never heard them with a flanger/phaser.

oh yeah, delay/echo. I was just going to use my Boss RE-20 Space Echo (Space Echo re-issue). That would be fine, right?

Why not a Vox Valvetronix?
Do YOU know who Les Paul is?

Guitars:
-Epiphone Dot Studio
Amps:
-Fender Stage 112 SE
Effects:
-BBE Soul Vibe
-Boss OD-1 Overdrive
-Ibanez DE-7 Delay
