I just realized I have no idea on this issue. I did a search, looked through some stickies, but I didn't find anything.

When I report someone, do I need to fill in the text field? Like, say some idiot starts a spam thread and I report it. Do I need to specify in that text field what post I'm reporting? Or does hitting the report button report that particular post, and the mod who recieves it is notified with a link or somesuch?

I usually give a really brief reason I'm reporting it, ie "spam. flaming." or whatever. I think the button reports the individual post.
Who dat?

Why's it matter? It's not like it takes a long time to write one sentence about why you're reporting someone.

I'm not asking if it tells why. I do that anyway - e.g., 'blatantly obvious spam thread.' I'm asking if I need to point out which particular thread or post, using the author, title, or other distinguishing features.

Like, let's say I reported you for being rude*. Would I need to say in that box 'MatrixClaw's post in the thead 'Reporting Question," started by Flying Couch.' Or would it point out that by itself?

*I'm not, and you weren't. My OP is not particularly well-worded, I couldn't think of how to phrase the question.

a short reason for why you're reporting the post is all that is required (spam, flaming, porn link, etc). we receive an email with a link to the post, the reason and the username of the person who reported the post.

That's what I was looking for. Thanks!
