Wtf.

Did i miss something? In the beginning, frank (part of donnie's hallucinations) saved his life from the jet engine that fell from the plane his mom was on, 28 days in the future . . . Which set off the events that led to the school getting flooded, Cunningham exposed,(events influenced by frank) and eventually gretchen getting ran over (by the actual frank) . . . so when the portal opened again . .he traveled through it, and chose to get smooshed to save gretchen? what happened to the plane his mom was on( it is missing and engine after all)? or is that part of a seperate stream of time?!?? am i totally takin the movie at face value? am i missin some huge part??
MIND fu ck!!! *explode*
Honestly. Wtf?

Hate the movie.

It seems as if every person who I know that was obsessed with A Nightmare Before Christmas became obsessed with Donnie Darko.

That was just some crazy sh*t movie that you just kinda have to like for it's wierdness. It doesn't make any sense, but I don't think it was meant to. You just either like it or hate it. I don't think there's much middle ground. And I think the whole point of the movie is that Donnie saves Gretchen. That's really all we are supposed to understand.

Long story short, Donnie saved the world by fixing a problem in the time space continuum. Everything in the movie was a parallel universe. At the end, he laughs because he realizes he won and he knows he's about to die.

He died to save Gretchen.

Him interacting with Gretchen lead to her death.

If he never met her, she wouldn't have died like she did.

Yeah this is pretty much it.

The timeline we see in the film apparently shouldn't have happened, and as such is unstable. There's lots of stuff about actual dead and living dead, but essentially, the time line we see will have a very limited lifespan (the 28 days.......).

The "time travel" donnie experiences is a result of the timelines fixing themselves, and as he wants to save Gretchen, and presumably hates the things he's done (the flooding, shooting Frank), he chooses to stay and die.

During the film he talks with Professor Monitoff about time travel, and that if time travel were possibly, it could be construed as proof of God (as it would only be possible to move in time if all destiny were pre-determined), and I believe he laughs at the end because he has proven the existence of God, but knows that he is about to die and will never be able to share this with anyone.

^^That last bit's a nice touch... To be honest, I still think he's laughing because he knows he's fixed everything but he has to die, making it ironic - there's a lot of irony in the whole film and it just makes that Tears for Fears song at the end fit perfectly.

"And I find it kind of funny, and I find it kind of sad,
That the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had..."

It's probably a combination of all these things, but yeah, the idea that he's laughing 'cos he has to die fits the song perfectly.

I remember the first time I saw this film I welled up when I heard that playing, when they wheel his body out of the house...

What do you mean not really?

I watched the entire trilogy last weekend, I can see it happening already!

Those movies were so on the money.

But you see, "88mph" was just a metaphor for "really fucking fast", as back when the films were made 88mph was an impressive speed.

On that topic, why the hell do people think going past the speed of light will break some sort of fictional time-space barrier and allow us to travel through time. Time doesn't even exist. It's just a measurement!

So is space. Anything that can be measured can be attributed to an axis.

I've only seen it once so I can't really judge it yet seeing as I feel a film must be seen at least twice before I can begin to make any kind of definitive judgement, but my first impressions upon seeing the movie that it is a very well-made and original film but that it gets extremely overrated by its fans. This is a shame because it's a very good film but many people get turned off by the hype that it receives.
It seems that because the film never fully explains itself at the end, that the fans tend to think that the film is trying to make some deep, philisophical points about the nature of life, the universe, and other topics in that vein. But I didn't really see that. Maybe subsequent viewings will prove me wrong but the first time through I couldn't really see where there could potentially be any major philosophical points, unlike a film like 2001, where I didn't completely understand it the first time but I knew that the film intended to make a much deeper point which could be interpreted any which way.
But that being said, as a piece of entertainment, I have come across few films as creative and original as this and I think if viewed in that sense and not in the feaux philosophical sense that many fans tend to hype it up as, it is a stunningly good film.

Because the event of the plane engine breaking off was due to the fact he was never crushed by it. If he had of been, then time would of been fine and the plane in the future would not of had its engine broken off by a time portal. Really the whole line of that is stupid because if he got smooshed, the time portal never opens, and if that never opens then how would he get smooshed. The movies good, not as good as everyone makes it out to be, it has holes.
