I don't know why this has irritated me as much as it is. I was at my son's graduation 2 weeks ago and if some redneck cop had tried to put the cuffs on me for being a little boisterous for 30 seconds I think it would have made national news.
Pure fucking bullshit.

It must be really be strange for the person getting graduated.

Soon they'll ban smiling. Then thinking happy thoughts. And just like that OMGZ 1984!!!1!

I guarantee you someone will come into this thread with that sort of attitude or an "F*CK TEH POLICE YEH!" or something.

Still, that is completely wrong.

Yeah, but rednecks are the ones that make the law necessary--let's get out the fog horn and posters when our favorite people come out, that will really add some class to this otherwise informal event.... It'll be just like a wrestlin' match! Granted arrest is definately overboard.

Nobody had air horns. What would be wrong with a poster? When my kids class graduated they gave each grad about 30 seconds on stage - alone - to enjoy their moment in the spotlight so to say and to allow friends and family to recognize their accomplishment. I think a particular school superintendent and principal need to pull the sticks outta their asses.

Last year in Galesburg, Ill., five students were denied diplomas from the city's lone public high school after enthusiastic friends or family members cheered for them during commencement. Students could get their diplomas after completing eight hours of public service for the school district.

Ouch. I don't even see how that would be fair, I mean the principal said they wanted people escorted out of the room if they cheered. So, why take it out on the kids? That just seem stupid to me.

Graduations take too long as it is, my graduation class was 500, so if everyone's family delays the graduation that is supposed to take 2 hours by 30 seconds each, then it would take over 6 hours! It sounds ridiculous, but the no applause has it's points.

Now as for the withholding of diplomas, I think the school board got sued for that if I remember correctly.
#19
I think it is certainly ridiculous for people to be arrested for cheering their friends or family.

But whats worse is that the students diploma's were held pending community service or whatever. That is just absurd to punish them.

They would have arrested my entire family, cause when my brother graduated, we practically brought down the whole place.

Mmmhmm, my graduating class had about 700 people in it. The time lapse between the reading of the names of the graduates was only a few seconds, so you usually had a few graduates walking across the stage at once. Many students got lots of cheers, and there was chaos during a few students' names, though not because of them but rather because of other events occuring in the arena, but they continued like clockwork. No pausing.

I heard a story like this once, but instead of being arrested, the parents' kid didn't get a diploma.

I agree with the rule, but they took it too far. The comments about graduation being too long are right on. Some people, ie orchestra/band (which I happen to be in), have to play at graduation. I've had to play at the past two and if it took any longer I'd stab myself in the face.

I think getting a diploma is enough, you'll live if your family doesn't cheer for you when you get on stage. I'd rather sit there for 2 hours than 6.

And for the record, there were cops standing by for anybody who cheered at my school graduation too, but I don't think anyone was actually arrested.

not in the article, but I've heard airhorns everytime I've been to a graduation ceremony. I think people are entitled to have their names read outloud, stand alone, and get a short applause, but 30 seconds is too long for any school with hundreds of students in a graduating class. I agree with you about the administrators though. This whole stuation was absolutely absurd, but overcelebration in the middle of an already long ceremony isn't real pleasant either.

Really? That's the best part about the graduation ceremony if you have someone you know in the graduating class. You shout at the top of your lungs congratulating them when their name is called. My graduation was a few hours long and I cannot imagine what it would've been like if everyone was silent, sitting there....silent.

Fucking ridiculous indeed.

yeah but if every one takes an extra 30 seconds, at a school like mine with about 500 kids per class, that makes graduation 4 hours longer. i dont want to be sitting around for an extra 4 hours, yeah arrest is probably overboard, but so is screaming and "getting a little boisterous." i mean what a way to show these kids the mature, adult world they're entering. dumbass.

I've had to sit through 4 graduations, god forbid they should be a little shorter. Maybe I'll feel different when I have a kid of my own, but people can survive without having their name yelled out as they graduate.
