You would probably need an interface, like a box with inputs and stuff, that outputs to Firewire or USB. good luck, I'm looking into stuff like this myself

yep, the mic -> cable -> preamp/interface -> computer

+1

I have two mics going to my M-Audio Pre-usb interface then the usb going into the laptop and im good to go.. The interface also has the phantom power i need to run one of the mics i use.. Only issue is its taken me forever to figure out how to work out the dual mic placement and volume settings but its well worth it in the end..

So basically....

Guitar ---> Amp ---> Mic ---> Cable ---> 1/4converter ---> front of my computer ---> Mixcraft

I use my Toneport GX and have a cheap Radioshack mic with a mono jack.

I go Guitar-->amp and then mic up the amp and plug that into the Toneport. I run it through Gearbox with no effects or amp models and record using Audacity. Someday I will get a nice SM57 and a proper interface and recording software, but this works for now.

not a 1/4 converter, something better. like a USB/audio interface.

No,

Guitar into your amp.
Amp makes noise.
Mic picks up noise.
Noise goes through cable.
Cable goes into USB interface.
USB interface into computer.

The end.
