Audacity is free but not fantastic. Personally id say your best bet is Acoustica Mixcraft or Cubase

is garageband good? i have it and use it a bit but i dont really have much experiance with other programs

Type "Reaper" on google. Its a programme your supposed to donate to, but no one really does. it is quite excellent.

Cubase would probably be your best bet. Or Pro Tools if you have like £3000 to spare.
