So I plan on having some friends over for a movie night every couple of weeks or so. Were gonna hang out and watch a movie on the new massive tv =D. What movies though? Comedy/action/horror/ anything! Doesnt have to be recent, but no older than 10 years. So what are some pure amazing/awesome movies I could get?
#2
Harold & Kumar. Watch White Castle now and Guantanamo Bay when it's out on DVD.
#3
A horror movie would be great on a BIG screen. Try the Japanese Version of The Ring lol.

I wonder how Star Wars looks on a big screen ... I assume you have a big sound system to go with that.
#6
if you want some truley amazing movies youre going to need to go back more than 10 years.
they havent made a decent comedy or horror in a long time.

Thanks for the recommendations so far. And yes I've got nice surround sound to go with the tv.

If it goes back more than 10 years thats fine, I just don't want to watch anything thats noticeably dated or anything.

Why no older than ten years? The year a movie came out shouldn't determine how good it is.

Noticeably old, or noticeably dated in the sense that you can't relate to it today (still think its pretty arbitrary and weak reason)?

Watch Seven Samurai. Old? Yes. Dated? Feck no. Amazing film. Anything by Kurosawa is good really. Ikiru (To Live) is a moving film that is one of my favourites among his, but it may feel "dated" to you.

Trainspotting and The Big Lebowski are great suggestions already put out. Dr. Strangelove: Or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb was also mentioned. Its a classic comedy worth seeing if you haven't already. Another (older) Peter Sellers film thats pretty hilarious is The Mouse That Roared. As for Kubrick, any of his films are awesome if you haven't seen them, and I'd recommend 2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange, and Paths of Glory (one of the best ending scenes in cinema), The Shining.... feck, all of his movies really.

La Haine is a great French film to check out, about life in the banlieues. Another good French film is L'Armée des ombres (Army of Shadows), one of the best films I've seen about the French Resistance in WWII.

Baraka is a sweet audio-visual experience if you are looking for something different.

Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly are great films by the same director, shot using a trippy technique that combines a sort of cell-shading with life photography.

Requiem For A Dream is an intense movie about drugs that you should see if you haven't.

I think Jack Nicholson is a great actor, so here are few recs of films he was in: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (one of my favourite films), Chinatown, Easy Rider, As Good As It Gets

One of my favourite 'war' themed movies is La Battaglia di Algeri (The Battle of Algiers), about the Algerian uprising / revolution against French Occupation. Realistic, gritty, emotional, stunning. Still very relevant today.

Keeping in the Arab world, Lawrence of Arabia is necessary viewing if you consider yourself a film buff of any sort and haven't seen it yet. Peter O'Toole's greatest performance, definitely. The bigger screen you can watch this on, the better.

In This World is a moving film shot like a documentary that follows two Afghani refugees trying to get to London. Realistic, eye-opening, and a good watch overall.

From just this past year or so there were many good movies that came out. La Vie En Rose, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (one of the most depressing yet emotionally uplifting films I've seen all year), No Country for Old Men, etc. etc. etc.

Some other more recent movies that were excellent that I can think of are: Mystic River, Clint Eastwood's Iwo Jima movies, El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth), Juno, The Lives of Others, Tsotsi.

Fuck, I could go on forever, and I don't even have my movie collection with me to consult. Just throwing out random stuff that comes to mind, not even sure what you are looking for really.

Take a look at any of the above films that you haven't seen though. I can always provide more recommendations in a similar vein if you find something you like.

Edit: Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels gets an emphatic +1 from me.
