I'm upgrading my video card and I want to know how to tell what video cards are compatible with my current system

Check what kind of slot you have for video (AGP or PCI-Express). If it's pci-e you should be good with any card that is also pci-e. If it's AGP, you'll need to find out what kind it is (AGP 4x 8x etc.) and make sure you get a card that is compatible with that.

if its AGP, maybe its time to upgrade more than just a video card

In XP
right-click my computer-->click manage-->select device manager-->expand display adapter on the right-->right-click the card you have installed now-->go to properties-->and see what the location says.

If its Vista, I'm not to sure but the same steps may work or there should be an easier way.

And if your computer is less than 3 years old than its probably pci-e anyway
