I just picked up an old Gibson ES-330 on Ebay for really cheap.

It looks to be in good shape except that someone put an old set of Dimarzio humbuckers in it.

I have an old set of Gibson P-90s that I took out of an SG that I sold a while back and would like to put them in this.

As you can imagine, the installation of humbuckers meant the holes had to be enlarged. Does anyone know if there are oversized pickup rings that would allow you to put a P-90 into a humbucker slot?

Thanks!

Here is the guitar:

You're putting a submachine gun in a GUITAR!?!

...why didn't I think of that!?

EDIT: And i'll bet there're oversized pickup rings somewhere. If you can buy crack on eBay, you can most definitely find oversized pickup rings.

submachine gun? I checked the bay but couldn't find anything. worst case scenerio is I'll swap the pickups out for a Gibson set. I would like to put P-90s back in it though.
#5
i understand that but I have a set of period correct Gibson pickups. I know the P-90s will be tller then the humbuckers but not as wide. If I can get a set of adapter rings (if they make them) I'll just have to get new covers (from dog ear to soap bar) and I'll be all set.

Plus, I know very little about replacement pickups.

Dude, a P90 doesn't fit in the route for a humbucker. It's too big one way, and too small the other way.

dude, i know. that's why i'm asking if there's a ring for this. maybe they make one for a deluxe conversion that i could mod.
#9
well:

1 - it's hollow
2 - it's got a trapeze bridge
3 - it has screw holes from where the p-90s were

so yep - it's a 330. i wish it were a 335 though!

Never seen a conversion ring. As original p90s didnt use rings and are direct mount. You could direct mount them and use blank pickguard to make something to cover the gaps. If dogears will fit in a humbucker route.

Duncan makes a humbucker sized 90... I know GFS does.

How much did that cost anyway?

$1259 so it was a good deal.

I know years ago they made something called goofhiders for deluxes to put mini humbuckers back in. I can't find any place to get them. I could make something, I do make pickguards for the guitars I build.

I'm looking at some Lollar pickups that are low wound. They have good reviews and are not the bad $300 a set, but that would mean humbuckers.

This is an original:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1959-All-Original-Gibson-ES-330-Gibson-HSC-MINTY-WOW_W0QQitemZ110261093112QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item110261093112&_trkparms=72%3A552%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

so like I say, always look for used with a mod or two and save some $$. I play, I don't collect so the one I bought should be cool for me.

well, i'm looking for low gain r&b type of tone. I'm not much for heavy gain and would like something that sounds like the guitar should - not something modern.

I'll check out those sd pickups. I wish Lollar would make a hb sized p-90, as i have heard great things bout those.

The GFS pickups are decent - I put them in guitars I build to keep costs low but usually request people send me what they want installed - don't think I would put them in this.

Duncan makes P-90 sized humbuckers. I have duncan P-90s in a guitar I have and they sound pretty good so those are an option I guess.

cool thanks! I don't suppose you know if there's a market for old DiMarzios.

I'm hoping someone out there wants them.
#21
that's what I'm hoping. I have a period correct Bigsby and a set of Klusons to go on this guitar so it should be a good guitar for low money.

Selling someone the pickups would make it that much beter

ooh, could we maybe get some pics? I love those old archtops and all.....it's supposed to be the Gibson version of the Epiphone Casino, yes?
Do YOU know who Les Paul is?

Guitars:
-Epiphone Dot Studio
Amps:
-Fender Stage 112 SE
Effects:
-BBE Soul Vibe
-Boss OD-1 Overdrive
-Ibanez DE-7 Delay

The original ES-330 and Casino guitars are identical except that the Casinos have different inlays on the neck and the headstock is different.

As I just purchased this I do not have pics right now, when I receive it I will post a video or some pics.

It pays to look for modded old guitars, as you get the build quality and material quality of an old Gibson for a low cost.
#26
Yeah. I may end up putting some PAF clones in. Lollar's underwounds are affordable and look like they would do what I want.
#27
I have studied the pics and I am going to attempt to put my P-90's in, as the top and bottom P-90 mounting holes are there.

I am going to try to make some little plexi plates to cover the gap

ive seen coversion rings. they were wood grain and homemade.

I could make those as well. I also remember 'goofhiders' that seem to no longer be avail - these were popular when people started putting mini hb's back into deluxes that had been modified.
#30
it looked like this, and then i saw another made of wood too.

this is actually a "set" but you could contact them to see if they sell separates.

Are those covers or are they humbucker shaped P-90's?

I mean, finding a P-90 the size of a humbucker is easy. I have an old set of P-90s that I want to put back into the P-90 mounting holes.

Thanks for the help but I don't think that's what I'm looking for.,
#32
yeah, that's "not" what you're for. i was saying that's how the conversion ring looked.

but then as an after thought, i guessed that if they make the part for their p90, then maybe they see the market and sell it as a separate too.

That part is for a humbucker sized P-90 - which a lot of people make. Again, thanks.

This is kind of what I need:

#35
ok guess im confused. i looked at ur guitar. the cavities fit a humbucker.

and the rings on the inside part would need to be for a p90?
the ring around that p90 in post 30 made sense i thought.

but if you need one like in post 33, no ive never seen anything like that without a tele bridge attached to it.

but again, whatever the measurements, i'm sure a dremel can handle it.

I looked at #30 and it looks like a humbucker shaped P-90. As I have stated a bunch of times, I have period correct P-90s. #30 is a company that sells pickups if I am not mistaken.

As I have said, worst case scenerio I will put Lollar P-90s shaped like humbuckers. I'm weary of the new budget pickup makers even though I'm sure some are good.

I have to look around at what I have, as I think I may have a set of Gibson Patent # pickups that I took out of an old SG I sold.
