Sign language is not universal. Like spoken languages, sign languages emerge naturally in communities and change through time.

Thanks, Wikipedia.

Thumbs up traditionally translates as the foulest of gesticular insults in some Middle Eastern countries — the most straightforward interpretation is 'Up yours, pal!' The sign has a similarly pejorative meaning in parts of West Africa, South America (except Brazil), Iran, Greece, and Sardinia. In Iran, it is traditionally an obscene gesture, equivalent to the use of the middle finger in the Western world.

Although it's a bit off-topic(ish), (seeing as I'm not answering the original question)
I found it fascinating when I found out that people who are born deaf, actually THINK and READ in sign language - seeing as they've never heard words in any language.
They've also no concept of music whatsoever.
I can't imagine being deaf.

no, for example in greece you arent allowed to lift your arm up and show an open hand, it's like our middle finger there

I was actually thinking about that same thing the other day. I can't imagine not thinking in words. I can't imagine not thinking in silence, not even knowing that noise exists

Thinking and reading in sign language is highly possible I suppose. Also thinking in images rather than words.
