Okay, im an okay guitarist who's getting up there. Im in a band

http://artists.ultimate-guitar.com/BDTB

We play alternative and hard rock, but im looking into some metal. So I'm buying a new set (amp, guitar, effects, the works)
any suggestions?

Price range: Up to about $500

Im thinking...

Guitar: Epiphone Goth Les Paul---$299.99
Amp: Line 6 Spider III 15w Combo Amp---$99.99
Various effects...

id suggest you try to stretch your budget a bit because $500 will not get a lot of quality gear (ie. that spider). That being said though, have you considered buying used equiptment? also what're playing through right now?

1. Line 6 Spider III's sound very processed and fake to me. Rolands are far better modeling amps. I have owned both. But thats just my opinion

2. 15 watts will NOT be enough in a band setting. 30 watts might do it.

3. The guitar is fine as your second guitar, if you are an intermediate player.

It'll be a bit difficult to get decent equipment for that price.

As for effects: DONT BUT DIGITECH

I went through about 4 of those before i switched over to BOSS.

You will DEFINITELY need to consider getting a bigger amp than that to get over your drummer....
regardless, try posting your request here:

It annoys me when kids sit there playing the sweet child o mine or smoke on the water intro riff repeatedly
and badly
and so loud the whole shop can't hear themselves think
and with the worst amp settings possible
