well ok it didnt catch on fire...but i had to get your attention.

tube amps sound better when their loud, so i tried it. I heard an interview on youtube w. Vanhalen, how he got some of his live sound back in the day was putting some sound proof material over his cab's speakers.

So i put a pillow over my VKs speaker and it made it considerabilly somoother and quieter. so i cranked it.

Then i had the idea of putting 10 towels over the speaker..and i did..and it sounded awesome..so i cranked it more...and then the sound started to fade like i turned it on standby and kept playing...then i started smoking...so i unpluged it and now...idk...blew a tube?

Moral of the story....dont put towels over your amp.

Probably overheated it. Eddie probably didn't mention he destroyed a lot of amps to get the sound he wanted.

You're forgetting that EVH has gear coming out of his ears - he can afford to do such antics :p :
Hendrix set his guitar alight.
The Who destroyed their gear.

Are you going to try those too?

EVH messed up his amps chiefly with the variac, though. Putting stuff in front of the speakers shouldn't do it, unless you covered up the back of the amp, too, and didn't let air into the chassis.

OMG bro, what were you thinking? It's like intentionally touching or putting something on a hot stove Moral of the story should be not to let anything touch your tubes. It wasn't really a bad idea to fill the enclosure.

It's kind of like putting polyfill in a sealed subwoofer enclosure. We did that for car audio. It's supposed to slow the air down and fool the woofer into reacting like it's in a bigger sealed box, making bass response deeper and louder.

I hope your amp is fine, other then the tube. A good idea might be to make some kind of plate to protect your tubes next time around.

He cranked the amp and and plugged in a bass. He then hit an E and placed the bass in a way that would cause it to feedback endlessly. He came back in like a week or a month to see how it was doing.

That is exactly what he did. I read that in an interview with him in Guitar World after the 5150 III came out. It was 2 weeks that he left it like that cranked and I believe it was in his studio so there obviously would have been a ton of feedback.

Eitherway, I think it passed that test.

anyways, heres an update.

My amp only over heated and nothings wrong w. it at all. I didnt put it over the tubes just over the speaker, and it sounded great. the only thing that i did wrong was played at 7 for about an hour then cranked it to ten and i guess it just had enough and needed to cool down
#27
Good to hear, glad you didn't ruin a good amp.

Cool, man glad to hear it that would have sucked... I've played my ultra for to long one night and it got hot enough to set off the fire alarm but the amp was fine it just overheated the shelf it was under lol

he also couldnt get any sound out of it at one point, then realized it wasnt plugged into the cab for the last 5 minutes. he plugged it in, cranked it up, and it sounded fine. lol

Yeah exactly.

But then again now he could destroy his entire rig and get one exactly to his specifications in 30 minutes or less.

you definitely just covered up the back of the amp, causing the tubes to overheat. What you did was essentially the equivalent to putting a stick in a cars exhaust. The tubes can't breathe so they will just overheat. Which starts fires. Your lucky your tubes/amp didn't get ruined. just put pillows in front of the speaker, never the rear.

its probably the fact that you turned it up to ten that messed it up.
i remember when i was doing research for building my own tube amp, i came across an article written by some boutique amp builder guy. he was talking about how he used to have to do repairs on amps when the owner would turn it up to ten, and then the amp would die.
according to him, a lot of amps really shouldn't be turned up to ten at all cos they're not designed to handle that kind of power.
you had a few towels in front of the speaker so you didn't hear what should have been deafening volume and kept pushing the amp further into the "overload" zone.

take it to a tech.
#40
^ its fine all it did was over heat, it works perfectly now just needed to cool down, and i made sure the towels werent over the tubes so i thought it wouldnt over heat.
