pit, should i quit guitar?

I've jut realized that i have no social life whatsoever, due to playing the guitar 6-10 hours a day; i won't be able to get anywhere with guitar or at least not as much money as an accountant could/does, because no matter how hard i try i will still be the **** musician with no friends to start a band; i won't have time to play in university anyway and will probably forget most of what i have learnt, and when i finish i will have to relearn if i want to try guitar again.

i honestly don't think i should play guitar anymore because it is simply a waste of time. what should i do?

Just play less and go out more?
Since the creation of the Internet, the Earth's rotation has been fueled, primarily, by the collective spinning of English teachers in their graves.

Don't quit, you'll regret later, just cut down on playing time, I only play about half an hour a day at the most

All the above responses are helpful (except Sean-Man's, although I lol'ed at that) so follow them.
I play by my own rules. And I have one rule; There are no rules... but if there are, they're there to be broken. Even this one.

Well i play guitar because it's a passion of mine. From what i just read it seems the only reason you've been playing is the possibility of a band and money? If that is so then yeah quit, but if you love guitar and playing then don't. Also judging by the 6-10 hours a day you must love guitar so ignore what i said and don't quit! who needs friends? guitar = ladies
#14
dont give up completely: just try to balance guitar a bit better with socialising. then when you get asked whether you have any talents (in your new circle of friends) then you can play something on guitar because you have practiced it for 10 hours a day.

if you think playing the guitar is a waste of time, just quit now, cause with thoughts like that, your probably never going to be good anyways.

So yeah. If you enjoy quitting guitar, it's a win-win.

if you like to play guitar, than do that
if you like ladies, than do them

6-10 hours a day sounds like either a slight exadgeration(sp?) or you just have the work ethic i wish i had, I can only play drums for an hour or so without getting bored, but then again, you shouldnt need a good work ethic to do what you love.

No, don't do that!! Just play more and more steadily approaching the 24 hour mark (you have long ago forfeited going to school, eating, drinking or sleeping).

All your problems will suddenly dissapear. You will have a great social life, despite the fact that you never socialise, and your band will form around with all the other members coming to your house to practise and you will eventually get massive.

/sarcasm

Do what the quote says, or smash your guitar up and post a video.

you treat playing guitar as a burden. i just don't understand that. it should be fun and relaxing. i play for the sheer enjoyment of playing for myself and sometimes my friends. i always end my practicing/playing in a good mood. it sounds like you end your practice sessions pissed off and upset. you should probably re-evaluate why you picked up your guitar in the first place

yeah, and if u still suck, start a punk band(no offense to the punks)

im thinking the same, but not just about guitar... about art, guitar, bass and drum's...

but at the end of the day, do you enjoy playing your guitar more than hanging out some where with a bunch of friends doing nothing... still play guitar, but make time for your friends and keep them, it get's harder as you get older.. ive learnt, i lost contact with a **** load of awesome friends, it sucks big time

also a guitar isnt just about making money or becoming famous... if you can play and it makes you feel happy and proud of yourself, then that is way better than having a few dollars in your pocket... how many people can say that they have masterd something they love doing... not many... stick at it!
#29
its your choice. if you want to quit then yeah. but i dont see why you do. 6-10 hours is a long day of practiving and maybe you could just play like 4 hours and have a social life? about the band thin, go to the local music shops and put up ads. if your skilled enough to be in a band, be in an effing band. not all bands started out as friends. good greif, man!
#30
If you've been playing for a long time and can play relatively well and/or if you love playing, stick with it. Also, if answer is yes, use your epic skills to gain a social life.

Yeah, play as much as you enjoy.

If theirs a party or something go to it instead of staying in.

What i mean is play guitar but put friends and work before it
#32
I work 40hours a week and go out with the peeps, and i still find time to play my guitar for 4-5 hours if not more a day...If you like guitar then keep playing and figure it out, but if your honestly considering quitting playing then it isn't that important to you, so just quit.

You know, you don't have to quit the guitar. It's not this official thing where you sign a contract to never play it again. If it's ruining your social life, go out. If you have no friends, then make some, maybe even musical ones to jam with. If it's really bothering you that much, just leave it for a while, until you want to come back. Man, just do what you want, you don't have to be tied down by an instrument.
#34
You seem like an "all or nothing" person to go from the extreme of 6 hours a day to none at all. Or you might just be burnt out. Take a break and don't sweat it too much. I think you are looking at it the wrong way. It's not a irreconcilable split if you don't pick it up for a few days or weeks. Even if you pick it up years from now, although it would take you a while to get back to whatever level you are at now, it's not as if the skills you have now will have vanished completely, they'd just be rusty. Either way, it's suppose to be fun.
#37
If you thinking playing the guitar is a 'waste of time' why the hell are you still playing it? obviously your not dedicated to it..so just leave it a couple of years n try n pick it up again or just slow down practicing or just quit?
