I have a problem...a friend of mine asked me today if I could fill in for their guitarist for a gig on saturday. (This coming saturday, the 21st) and I'm sorta in the band (the guitarist I'm filling in for also happens to be moving away in a few weeks) so I said I'd do it. That's all fine and dandy, except for the fact that I have to learn all of these songs within just a few days time, and learn to play them well.

What's the best way to go about this? I have a job, so it's not like I can practice all day long, AND (the worst part) is that I'm have an extremely short attention span, I can't focus on one thing for very long, and get distracted easily. To add to the trouble, I've NEVER played a gig, or even with a band at all. Not to mention that I don't even know half of the songs, let alone how to play them. (It's nice to at least know a song before you try to play it).

So again, what's the best way to learn these songs? Focus on one at a time, or get to know each one a little, and then a little more, etc? Or what?

If anybody could give me some suggestions...that would be great...(the first tip is probably getting of UG and practicing).

Mp3 the tunes whilst in work, traveling to work, eating etc.
Practice the tunes over and over for an hour each.
Jam with the band at least 3 times to get a feel for the band.

Sounds like you're screwed. Just do your best to learn some of them, and let the band know of your troubles.

Get one all the way down before you start another.

Just fcking learn the songs... there's no "whats the best way to do this" about it. You're not gonna learn any faster by asking people on a guitar forum.. the pit no less, about how to do it.

well, I'd agree with one of the earlier comments, listen to the mp3s on the journey to work etc and hopefully they will be easier to remember, if not, it makes it easier to improvise over.

lol, i've also got a gig on saturday, only it's hard rock/metal at a town carnival after some 'acid jazz funk'. not exactly ideal right genre for it but whatever lol.

If it's your first gig, most important thing to do is just enjoy what you are doing.

Yeah I know, I'm not saying any of it necessarily hard, but I can't memorize them, being tired as **** doesn't help either i suppose

Ask to jam with them, learn all the chord progressions, memorize the hooks of the song and the rest will come easily, and for soloing just make **** up man, it'll bring a new perspective to it. Maybe you'll be the influence the band needs to make it big.

My band played a frat gig in which we had 3 days to learn 26 songs, so we spent about 5 or 6 hours a night and just didn't sleep and it went really well. Start with the easy ones, and just break it up a little and its not that bad, just try and know them all at least reasonably well the night before the gig so you can do a full ru through. We had to play Crazy Bitch without ever actually playing the song together, and I semi-faked the solo by learning the basics of it and just wahing the hell out of it, but nobody knew the difference.
#23
youre not gonna learn it if you stay on here and check.
i'd say:
get the mp3's and listen to it every chance you get.
practice from when you get home until you go to bed.
repeat

what the **** are you talking about? when people play nirvana its only teen spirit, and very few bands can actually pull off playing rage songs, and even then there not very common things to play...

and saying Nirvana and Rage dont make real songs? I do have to agree with the thing about green day, but you still dont ever hear their songs played

It's gonna take some self-discipline, but if you're really going to do this, you need to try your best to focus, and spend as much time practicing as you possibly can.

Try putting their music on your stereo and playing along to it. I've learned like 90,000 cover songs that way.

nicccceee...
Memphis is simple as can be.
still fly uses the same riffs over and over. with an awesome breakdown.
when the sun sleeps is just really fun and simple to play.
screw the other songs.

*edit*
as for getting familiar and memorizing how the songs go, just put them on a playlist and play it constantly. or listen to each song on repeat for an hour.

The a7x songs on that list are both really easy (Chapter four being the easier), so those won't take long. I have no idea what the rest of them are.

Play them whenever you can, and when you can't listen to them on an mp3 player whilst in work, pleasing the missus, etc.

i would make sure you know the songs inside out... listen to them for at least a full day...
then next two days just practice your ass off and memorize them
