So I plan on playing cover songs, with backing from MIDI tracks. I'd like to be able to sequence drums, bass, and maybe some other things such as piano and strings. What would be best is if I could use my computer for the sequencer, and run the signals out to my drum machine and keyboards for bass/piano/string sounds, which would then be run into my PA. Can anyone reccommend some software that would get me going in the right direction with this?

Ableton Live is optimized for live performances (hence the name). That's what I use.
Telecaster - SG - Jaguar
Princeton Reverb, Extra Reverb
P-Bass - Mustang Bass
Apogee Duet 2 - Ableton Suite

What do you use it for personally?

I would just record the backing tracks onto an ADAT tape and use that, unless you actually plan on playing stuff through the computer (by this I mean like using a MIDI controller to play a soft synth on the computer or something) live. Using a sequencer solely to provide backing tracks is a needless hassle with which too many things can go wrong.

^I'm tempted to agree with this...

Are you actually planning to manipulate the tracks in any way whilst performing?
There is poetry in despair.

Well I would like to be able to adjust the tracks if need be.
