I quite new to guitar, at the moment I am learning Opeth's Dirge for November, but need a quick solution for the 3rd electric guitar section.

It goes like this;
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7--77777-7777-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------9-99999-9999*-****-****7-77777-77776-66666-66663-33335-55555
5--55555-5555-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------7-77777-77778-8888-88885-55555-55554-44444-44441-11113-33333

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
55555-55555-5555----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
33333-33333-3333----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*=10

it is all up and down strumming, as most of the song is, but I dont know how to strum that without also strumming the string in between. Do I try and mute the string with a finger? I tried that and it sounds like ****. At the moment I just turn them into three string power chords but it sounds like how it should be when you pluck them with the plectrum and middle finger, however it seems far too fast for that and does not sound like the up and down strumming like on the record. I suspect it is simply muting the string and mastering the control of the muted string?

what do I do?

yea mate its just muting the string inbetween with your finger.

Might take some practice but what i do is let the index finger just mute the middle string so it can be moved around without sounding crap.

Angle your index finger while it's on the fret to silence the other string. Like, place it on the 5th fret, then angle it so it touches the D string and mutes it.
