Its so they can hear music and not get tintinus at the same time. My drummer mate gets earache at concerts because he's drummed without earplug too much.

I wear headphones because it makes it easier to hear the metronome. Usually I can only slightly hear the music. Lots of practice with the band and a loud metronome is the way to go, and headphones are necessary for that.
