I would say take your amp to a store and try them out, then pick the one that you like the best. You can listen to people rant about the best cheap guitars all you want, and you'll probably buy something you dont like. Be sure to explain what kind of sound your looking for to an employee so they know where to start, and don't settle.....if you don't like something about it.......don't get it.

You CAN find the perfect $200 guitar.

If $200 is you price limit, you'd be better off looking for something used. Lots of sub $200 goodies out there on the used market.

I'd say the Epiphone dot studio.
Cheapest semi-hollow you can buy right now, and really great quality.

Yeah, you'll wanna change the Pickups EVENTUALLY, but it's a great start.

OR:

Get a les paul junior, swap the pickup for a GFS mean 90 or vintage 59, and save until you have another 250 for the valve junior half stack. Blues and classic to hard rock all the way, baby.
...
Please do not insinuate anything sexual from that.

If your friends don't like your guitar, cover it in stickers and it'll be teh rawks!

i'd hold off on getting a half stack if you aren't gigging. The combo amp can _scream_ if you crank it.

+1 Just recieved an Al-3000 that I will be reviewing for the August issue of FrugalGuitarist.com. Very high quality and affordable guitars.
