Surprisingly nothing came up on the search bar, so..

In your opinion, what makes a song metal (this can mean a variety of things, think of all the subgenres of metal there are out there)?
#3
Um, well they have to be metal, have to have feeling and not just random who can be more brutal kinda thing, and everything metal7690 said
5150 III 100W, Mesa 4x12 Cab, Framus Cobra Cab, M-Audio Profire 610, ISA One Pre, SC607-b, Equator D5's, Countryman Type 85 Di box, Radial JCR, Superior Drummer, SSD 4 Ex, TS9, NS-2 and the list goes on and on

are you referring to the difference between metal and metalcore?
because after a while, it becomes easy to tell, and of course there are the obvious differences like breakdowns

No, just in general, what makes a song "metal" in your opinion. I can spot (or rather, hear) the differences, but I'm just curious what it takes for a song to be "metal" in the opinions of others .

You have to write a song that goes

TYRANT
capture of humanity
TYRANT
conqueror of all
TYRANT
hideous destructor
TYRANT
everyone shall fall

You really didn't search to hard. I can remember multiple 'what makes something metal' threads, or some combination of those words and themes.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

Metal bands that have absolutelt no association with -core use breakdown all the time. IE Suffocation, Decapitated, Cryptopsy (well, old Cryptopsy, they can't be called NOT core now...)
#20
saying that Metal doesn't use breakdowns is idiotic. Thrash has countless breakdowns, as does Grind and Death Metal. Hell, even Black Metal has breakdowns.

Soft, clean vocals, with lyrics about love portrayed in a positive way sung over a basic 3-chord structure being softly strummed acoustic guitar in standard tuning with a capo on the third fret. ****ing br00tal.

when it feels metal, it's metal.

when it makes you air (instrument)

when it makes you want to kill

when it makes you want to bang your head

when it makes you clench your fist

when it makes your face contort

when it makes you feel like there's more beyond this life

That all may sound cheesy, but that's what it feels like for me...

since when did the key of a song have anything to do with its genre?

you could have the heaviest song ever in the key of Bb,, or have some 12 bar blues in Bb...

That just comes from liking a band/song/genre, just because you feel that for this genre doesn't mean someone else won't feel it for another. What you said actually is just a general statement about all art in general.
