(what, it's 3 strings retuned right?)

Yes it is. Top 3 strings tuned to form an open D chord.

As for drop D, I suppose I'd go for Take The Power Back by RATM.

Its the only reason for Drop anything really, to play power chords with one finger. If you're a half decent guitarist, pretty much any song in Drop D can be played in Standard D.

Lordi's pretty fun, even if the cheese factor may be off-putting...
But yeah, songs like 'Who's Your Daddy', or the even simpler 'Beast Loose in Paradise' are geat fun hehe.

Go and listen to Home by Dream Theater, look at the tabs and then tell me you can play that in D standard. Also, it they might not be Drop D (Drop C# and B respectively) but go and listen to Psalm of Lydia by Nevermore and Before I Forget by Slipknot and tell me you can play those in their respective standard tunings.

Edit: Add Vicarious by Tool to that list.

if u can play a song, who cares what tuning its in, its all the same notes, why not make it easier for yourself? it doesnt take very long to retune to something else..

Do you plan on buying a guitar fitted with a Floyd Rose any time soon?

Drop d CAN make playing easier, but since when does easier mean "not good". If youre the kind of guitar player who feels they need to play a song in different tuning making the song harder to play simply for the sake of it being harder... then... yeah... have fun.

Fun drop d songs:

Avenged Sevenfold: Unholy confessions

Billy Talent- Pins and needles
- Fallen Leaves
- River Below
- Covered in Cowardice

Rage against the machine: Wake up

Audioslave: show me how to live

All that remains: empty inside

just some...

i agree with him, most people tune to drop d becasue they cant acually play that well and can get away with playing whole songs with one finger...ive seen it happen so too many times

*bows*

That being said, there are some impressive songs played in drop D which simply couldn't be done in standard. As has been mentioned, Dream Theatre are an example.

THIS.

Try playing effing Masturbating The War God, or Sacrifice Unto Sebek, songs that have those fast, chugging, palm muted powerchords that can be played with one finger in a drop tuning, but require 3 in a Standard tuning.

thats like saying the only reason people play in standard is because they are too lazy to down tune, its not true
people like to experiment with tunings and see which is more comfortable for them

Open Car - Porcupine Tree.

And Drop D isn't playing with 1 finger lol. Any good musician wouldn't hate on a tuning anyways, they're there for different sounds and noises, so what if ppl play drop D.

Lots of Tool is also.

Yamaha RG guitar w/ Floyd Rose
