im well aware that FRs are pains in the ass when it comes to changing tuning, but what about a tremolo like on a strat or the prs se custom? does it do the same thing?

Not at all.
A strat tremolo is a lot more balanced out than a FR is, and it is much much easier to tune, change strings, etc..

thanks guys, that will certainly influence my decision on a new guitar.

basically once they are properly adjusted u can do w/e with string gauge and tuning and it wont go out of place, correct?

If you're talking about a stop-tail, then yeah - you can muck around with tunings, etc. A good set of tuners will help also.
