Hey guys, looking to get a les paul copy.
I'm not sure which one is best, but for now I've been looking at
Hagstrom super swedes, Epiphone LP Custom, and agile 3100.
Running through a Traynor YCV50BLUE, i play rock.
Overall, my greatest concern is sustain, i want MASSIVE sustain.
=) sustain iz goodz.... Thoughts? suggestions? Looked at Greco's
but couldn't find a site that deals them, and they kinda look cheap.

I'd also open my mind to some Burny's, Tokai's, and Edwards. You could find a few in your range (not sure about the Edwards, probably have to save up a BIT more). As for sustain...They're all pretty much hunks of mahogany, so I don't think the sustain would be THAT big of a difference, but the best thing is to try what you can out through the Traynor and see what you like.

I'm starting to think that there should be an official 'Les Paul Copy' thread. If only started posting here regularly in the last couple of weeks, and I've already lost count over how many 'which LP copy should I get?' threads I've seen/replied to. How do we start sticky threads?
#4
+1 on the Edwards. they make good copies of les pauls. Grassroots also has some, its also made by ESP.

+1 also to the Les Paul Copy thread. how do start that?
Ibanez RG321MH (Air Classic/Tone Zone)
Fernandes Telecaster (Twang King/stock bridge pickup)
Blackstar HT-20 (Scumback 55 speaker/ Tung Sol tubes)

^^ Beg and plead to the mods...

It would be nice. And there are a couple of other threads that should be stickied as well...

EDIT: Actually what's needed is a one-stop shop type of deal for threads. Just a single thread that links to the FR setupe guide, tunings thread, LP thread, and so on. That way the the threads are easily accesible without having all the clutter at the top of the page.

I'm assuming the people here don't go to the pit often?

I don't know what the mods here are like but in the pit they don't tend to sticky the "one stop shop" threads,it pissed me off when I spent a lot of time and effort making one and then a less comprehensive one was made by a mod and stickied

Get the Hagstrom

How much are you going to spend? I am amazed at the tone I get from my Epi LP standard.

I would recommend a Epi standard or custom. They are high quality guitars. With some nice pups and caps in them they are real impressive.

If you have the money $600-$800 Get a used Epi Elitist. IMO is better then a Gibson standard and would blow the doors off a Gibson Studio.
#12
how easy are edwards and tokais to get on the moon?

(meaning: where are you really from? that'll affect recommendations a lot)

I'm leaning towards the Hagstrom super swede, cause, its got a really thin neck
and it has that coil tap which is a bonus. If it sounds the same/better as a Epi LP
Standard, ill probably get it. Don't think i want a Edwards, I've never heard anything
about them. I've heard only good things about The Epi Elite, but that's a little out of
my price range.

What if i just bought the best guitar of these wood component wise, and got burstbucker
pros in there, that's whats the Gibson Les Paul's use right?

well an edwards would annihilate an epi les paul standard. most, if not all, japanese copies will.

you can get better pickups, at a better value, than gibson burstbuckers; they're decent stock pickups, but it doesn't make all that much sense to upgrade to them, in my opinion. Plenty of people upgrade gibson pickups too.

go away epiphone fanboy. the fact that gibson owns epiphone actually means that you're getting less for your money- they want you to step up to the gibson version eventually. whereas other brands without the name recognition have to give you better value for your money (or most people would just buy the gibson).

still can't understand why they stuck a jb in there... why not a bridge version of the '59, or even a custom or custom 5? I mean, plenty of other edwards models have those...

Ive played a gibson LP and a BUNCH of epi lp copies side by side, and there wasnt
a huge difference sound wise. Most tone comes from the amp.

i wouldn't go overboard- they aren't amazing in the way that, say, a huber or a tyler is. Just they're extremely nice guitars (similar quality to gibson and fender USA models, though upgrading the tone and volume pots would be a good idea), for a pretty decent price. considering you're in the USA, though, gibson are reasonably decent value already.

anyway, here's the edwards site: http://www.espguitars.co.jp/edwards/index.html (click on the scroll-down menus, don't worry, most of it's in english)

no worries. there's nothing wrong with epiphones (and i agree with you about the amp), just, in my opinion, japanese copies are better, for not very much more money (depends on the model of course).

the variable resistors and capacitors under the volume and tone knobs. the edwards ones are a bit, well, cheap. it's pretty cheap to upgrade if you know how to solder, though- like maybe $15.

as for the one to buy, it's really up to you and what you want:

http://www.espguitars.co.jp/edwards/lp/E-LP-98LTS.html that's the one i have. allegedly the lacquer taste series ones are slightly nicer, they have a poly undercoat and nitrocellulose topcoat, which allegedly has better tone and vintage mojo. But i haven't tried any of the non-LTS series, so I can't corroborate that. If you do get an LTS one, though, you need to protect it from your guitar stand (anywhere it's in contact with the stand) with a cloth, as nitrocellulose can react with, erm, guitar stands.

if you don't mind/like relics, there's this one with nicer pickups (duncan antiquities; it is quite a bit more expensive though): http://www.espguitars.co.jp/edwards/lp/E-LP-130LTS.html

if you're after a les paul custom, there's this one: http://www.espguitars.co.jp/edwards/lp/E-LP-98LTC.html

of course, if you don't mind about the nitro finish and the more vintage-looking parts, there are a bunch of other les paul copies in the other non-LTS series:

http://www.espguitars.co.jp/edwards/lp/E-LP-112CE.html (with emgs for metal)
