Ok, if you've never touched a guitar in your life try songs like Smoke on the Water (The easy version) and Iron Man (The easy version) and Sunshine of Your love.

If you want something to help your "muscle memory" try The Zephyr Song by The Red Hot CHili Peppers or perhaps Behind Blue Eyes by The Who.

You know how to read tablatures, right? If not there are a couple lessons in that link I put above. Tablatures are what UG is. You know how to work UG (Ultimate-guitar.com) right? WHen you look for tabs pick the tab with the highest ratings (5stars being the best).

Learn the basic chords such as: D (and Dminor), G, A (and Aminor), C, E(and Eminor), F.
After you've learned those you're on your way.

Don't post in The Pit unless it is absolutely necessary, Good Luck!

EDIT: Buy a tuner and learn how to use it.

By the way, are you on acoustic or electric guitar?

I recomend starting on acoustic to really break in your fingers. Remember this simple rule: If you can play it on acoustic, you can play it on electric.

EDIT EDIT: I aslo reccomend buying some good strings once you've decided to keep playing guitar. I don't know what kind of guitar/strings you have but I personally use Elixir guitar strings for both my acoustic and electric.

just play around for a few days and read online, if u can get some lessons dont try and be amazig fast, ull just get pissed and want to quit, just ake ur time have fun and keep practicing
When I was in highschool 4 or 5 years ago my history teacher crapped herself (she had a problem, she was wearing dippers and all that but damn it was retarded and funny as hell).

You could hear the farts all over the classroom, lol.

Honestly, get some lessons, they are great, or do you have a specific question on what to do?
Out here you've gotta know where your towel is!

When you play m,ore than one note it is called a "chord:.
But well, that's not really a chord you should be learning. First of all, it doesn't sound good. Second of all, it's not basic.

Basic would be an E:
|0
|0
|1<--Pointer FInger
|2<--Ring FInger
|2<--Middle Finger
|0

D
|2-<--Middle Finger
|3-<--Ring Finger
|2-<--Pointer FInger
|0-
|0-
|--

G
|3<--Pinky
|3<--Ring
|0
|0
|2<--Pointer
|3<--Middle

But to be honest I wouldn't jump right into chords before forming callouses.

Nah but seriously lessons cant really go wrong... I dont play the guitar but what i presume would work is just start of with the basic chords and practice the sh1t outta them and then learn some easy slow songs

Oh here's a little something to help you remember the string names

Every (Highest, thinnest string.)

Easter (Lowest, Fattest string)

Heh. I like this one too, read from the bottom (Low-E) up.

To the OP: THIS.

Buy it and do the whole thing. Yes you can just try to memorize the tabs from some songs you know, but if you do something a bit more structured like the book I mentioned you actually learn useful concepts rather than just memorizing fingering.
