This might be kind of hard to explain. When i play my guitar, I only press my finger down on the fret of the note being played, and not any of the frets higher on the neck of the guitar. I didnt question this until i came across a tab with a pull off on it. So should I always push the strings against frets that are higher up then the fret im playing, or just when theres a pull off?

its really optional,if you know you`ll need to pull off, hammer on,etc`,
then fret your finger.. otherwise, there`s no really a point in doing it

if you can do it only when a pull off is necessary, it will conserve the most energy... but

listen to david bowie, do what feels natural to you

Oh yeah, and if guitar hero got you into the guitar? you're really playing for the wrong reasons.

there is no wrong reason to play a guitar, except for world enslavement and extermination of certain races, but those guys never make it big anyway.
